Sprinkle…rhymes with Tinkle.
Is Wayne Tinkle next?
I think Sprinkle is likely leading candidate for WA. He’s from the state.

As for Tinkle, as a Beaver fan I hope he’s gone, but comes down to whether they want to eat the money. If Pac 11 hadn’t dissolved or Beavers had found a good landing spot I think he’d be gone for sure, but with them trying to piece things together who knows. Hopefully they can work something out cuz they have to do something.

The other thing when discussing possible replacements if he is let go is how much will they pay new coach. Highly doubt we’re talking about same salary that Tinkle is getting ($2.8M I think). I’d guess between $1M and $2M, with the high side possibly more like $1.5M.

Sprinkle is pretty good at basketball coaching. He was on Dan Patrick yesterday with his old MT high school buddy Ryan Leaf

I see this as a surprising move only because he is a former player and former beloved player at the school. I think Mullins got the ship back in the right direction after the Barry Hinson years but I would agree that their offense was rather boring to watch and they had a ceiling there. Defensively, they were a solid team but definitely offensively challenged. I think seeing how Domask and Lance Jones have done at the B10 level, it's safe to say that a lot of it was probably offensive scheme. I do think that the other Xavier Johnson good play at the high major level if he has any eligibility left. Still surprised by the move though given they were still in the upper half of The Valley again this season. This does show that they are serious about competing. Unfortuately, SIU is a stepping stone type of job. So, to let one of your own go is not a great look. I think Mullins would've stayed around and wouldn't have bolted like a Bruce Weber or Matt Painter did
This is the thing that makes this seem like a pretty bad move from an outsiders perspective. If Mullins had been delivering Patrick Ewing or Kenny Payne type of records then I would understand, but they were a competitive team in the top five of the conference and the program certainly better off than it was when he was hired.

I understand the frustration of not making the tourney after five years, but now even if you make the right hire and find someone who an get you back to the NCAA's, they are much more likely to bolt for a bigger job, where Mullins was much more likely to be loyal to his alma mater.

I can't help but feel that this is SIU overestimating what kind of program they actually are in today's basketball environment, despite a proud history overall.

Romar's heater created unrealistic expectations for Washington. They haven't sniffed this since.

if Illinois and IU opened at the same time, who is getting the best candidate? and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on this, but wasn't Archie our first choice before Underwood?

Sean is not going to OSU unless they have doubled their initial offer ... And fixed their NIL issues ...

I have been told Dusty has been their target for about a week now ...
I would think they would have the NIL like a well oiled machine.

Sean would be smart to stay clear.

SIU is my second favorite team, but this should not be surprising. SIU has a very strong basketball history, and they haven't made the tournament since 2007. They have arguably the best basketball history in the MVC along with Bradley and Indiana State.

It would have been hard beating out Drake last year, but to have Marcus Domask and Lance Jones last year and have that poor an offense is inexcusable.

I like Mullins, but this was his 5th year and SIU is middle of the pack and just got bounced out of Arch Madness by a very bad UIC team. I am pleased they got serious and made this move.
I follow SIU too. They're getting a lot of !!!! for this because they won 23 last year and 19 this year but they had a lot of empty wins against bad teams. Whenever they played good teams they would be outcoached and there would be a significant talent gap. They only made it to the semifinals in their conference tourney 1 time in 5 years and 4 of those years they had Marcus Domask and Lance Jones on their team. Mullins was also a pretty terrible in-game coach. I think he'll do well as an assistant next year and I think SIU might the right call because they had to fire or extend.

Seems to me if I were a Big Ten bball program with a coaching vacancy, I might be all in on Lamont Paris (Ohio native, coached at Wisconsin and a couple Indiana schools) as a coach on the rise. (Like June and July, he may be hotter right now than May?*) I imagine South Carolina is putting together an extension offer at this moment and his agent is putting in hours assembling his options.

*I'm not out to downplay Dusty May's appeal. I just wanted to join the IL pun party.

I am curious whether Paris, a fellow midwesterner, is at the top of big-time coach candidate lists; especially with OSU, Michigan, and Indiana all open or speculated to come open soon and rumblings that Greg Gard should be fired as well. Paris--in his second year at SC, after an impressive five year ascent at Chattanooga--has the Gamecocks at a level that program has seen maybe 3-4 times since 1975: a top 20 ranking that includes a 4-3 record this year against a very strong top half of the SEC. Owing to his young head coaching career, he has as yet just one tournament appearance (final year at Chattanooga) and no tournament wins.

What does someone more in the know than me have to say about Paris' reputation and SC's appeal as a job related to other big jobs? Does he need another year of high major success and/or some tournament wins to be in high demand? With his experience and quick rise, I might as an AD be inclined to try to get him now before the buyouts and salary demands really expand.

I haven’t checked the SIU has an equivalent to Loyalty, but I imagine most of the season’s banter had a theme of “we had Domask and Jones and did what?”

Totally my guess here, but I feel like schools are still wrapping their heads around the new world of NIL, and it is still rather disorganized overall ... so the "best" schools for NIL have got their ducks in a row for one sport. I'm sure OSU's football NIL is top 5 in the nation, but it seems plausible their basketball NIL remains on the back burner and more lackluster than it could/should be.

I think an insider said once that Indiana has the most NIL resources in the conference (not surprising since their basketball fans are Notre Dame fans in the fall!) and that Illinois was in second, with MSU in third? I might be remembering that incorrectly. My total pulled-out-of-thin-air guess for basketball NIL rankings would be this ... and I would seriously love for an insider to tell me how terribly wrong this is because I love learning about this stuff! :ROFLMAO:

1. Indiana
2. Illinois
3. Michigan State
4. Michigan - I know they suck now, but they have a ton of money and have recruited very well. Most going to football but plenty leftover!
5. Ohio State - Even an unorganized OSU is still good for some $$$, same story as Michigan.
6. Wisconsin - I was totally unsure where to put them, lol...
7. Maryland - A "basketball school" with Under Armour connections, but it seems their fan interest is SO fickle.
8. Purdue - Maybe it has changed, but I saw on a Purdue board once that they felt they were "really behind" for NIL.
9. Minnesota - Fickle fan base but still the only show in town.
10. Rutgers - Wild card ... I could see their NIL going from "bad" to "actually really good" if they strung together a few solid seasons. Clearly Pike is recruiting well!
11. Nebraska - Probably better than we all think, but it would suffer from being such a football school.
12. Iowa - I KNOW I have heard Iowa people complain that their NIL sucks.
13. Northwestern - Not sure they even try?
14. Penn State - ALL goin' to football.

Should make it clear that no one really knows exactly how much NIL people have ... Whatever people tell you ... It's probably 500k more than they've got and with these football schools ... They have a ton of NIL but how much do they really give to hoops ... It kinda varies YOY ... But from everything I have gathered this would be my list ...

1. Illinois
2. Indiana
3. Michigan State
4. Rutgers
5. Maryland
6. Purdue
7. Michigan
8. Nebraska
9. Ohio State
10. Wisconsin
11. Minnesota
12. Iowa
13. Penn State
14. NW
