Highly highly doubt we see ex-NBA players without other experience in the CBB coaching ranks in the future after Juwan, Mullin, Ewing have flamed out so spectacularly.
Yeah, and I'll admit years ago, a part of me wanted to see Deron as our head coach. Brilliant basketball mind. But he'd never want the gig, and it seems pretty clear most former stars don't make great coaches.

Unfortunately, people (ADs and others) never learn. It is almost a "don't confuse me with the facts" situation especially when the ex-NBA player is an ex-alum. Ooh, nice shiny new ex-NBA player.
And on this general topic, what do people think about Hardaway at Memphis? After a recent Memphis loss, I believe one of the insiders said he was "done". But I checked his record and it seems pretty good, 20 or more wins every year. So he might be the exception to the rule?

Penny has a pretty good team at Memphis. The deck was stacked against Stackhouse at Vandy from the jump.

Bad programs get seduced by big names, hoping for quick recruiting results. Juwan has the recruiting thing locked down, just not the coaching. I don't think AD's learn very well form other's mistakes...

A little off topic, but . . .
Rolling Meadows High School just hired Robbie Gould as their head football coach. As far as I can tell, his only coaching experience is a partial season as an assistant at a nearby high school. Don't expect that to turn out well.

Chris Collins is doing ridiculously well at NW this season. I wonder why somebody doesn't throw a boatload of money at him to resurrect their program.

- Louisville 8-20
- Texas 18-10, 7-8
- LSU 15-13
- Miami 15-14

PS I would love to see 20-8 NW meet 22-6 Duke in NCAA. I think Duke may regret promoting Scheyer instead of bring Chris back. I also would not mind Chris leaving NW. Its really irritating having to fight to beat NW. They need to return to their historical location in the B10 basement.

Be surprised if he leaves NW on his own. He's a Chicago guy. Has resurrected the program for now. I think Duke would be the only program he would be interested in, if it ever opened up.

As I was gently reminded before, Collins is actually a North Shore suburban guy. :)

But I do agree with your point. I think he realizes he has a pretty good gig at NW - especially if he can keep anything close to this going consistently. The expectation at Louisville and Texas will be crazy, and I don't see him going to Miami or LSU.

Well, how far does he want his coaching career to go and does he want the national accolades?

Texas/Louisville/LSU....If you want to be in the Final Four, truly be on the national stage and make a mountain of money, you make the move with full knowledge that it's a loooooong way down if you fail and the pressure is enormous.

NW..... you'll never be a Final Four contender, you'll never be viewed highly on the national level, but you pretty much have a lifetime contract, no stress and every once in a while, you get a Boo Buie that will make you relevant at the conference level.

It's all preference. He seems like a guy who enjoys coaching kids up, he enjoys being close to home and he really doesn't have aspirations to go be in an absolute pressure cooker. Nothing wrong with that.

Last year was only the 2nd year under Collins that Northwestern finished better than 9th in the conference. This is Collins' 11th season.

They've been near the basement most of Collins' tenure.

I would think that NW being in a huge market area would have plenty of NIL $$$$ if they got their ducks in a row.....I see no reason why a coach and AD couldn't turn them into legit contenders and lure in high level talent on a regular basis.....but the admissions office might have something to say about this

Once boo booie and others are gone, I expect them back in the cellar as the doormat

Pains me to say it this way, but give me NW in your example. Make $3M a year in a lower-stress environment, retire at 50 and buy a beach house.

Not to mention you are a hero at that school for doing what would be considered the bare minimum for a successful season.
