Not just Krikke, they lost their top 4 scorers. So on an 11 win mid-major, that was a huge rebuild. It will take 2-3 more seasons at least to show results.
They have the freshman of the year, so here's hoping he's got a good start.

Southern Illinois basketball shockingly fires head coach after Missouri Valley Tournament upset

Thursday’s loss to UIC was certainly not the way that Southern Illinois wanted their season to end. In order to make the NCAA Tournament, the Salukis needed the automatic qualifier from winning the Missouri Valley Tournament. That didn’t happen, and they finish the year with a 19-13 overall record and an 11-9 mark in conference play.

I would certainly say he didn't do too bad considering he lost two big time players to the Top 2 teams in the B1G 10!

Yeah, this is more than a little surprising. SIU has intermittently been pretty good, but has largely been a dumpster fire since Lowery's first few years. It seemed as though Mullins had done a pretty good job of making them competitive again

SIU is my second favorite team, but this should not be surprising. SIU has a very strong basketball history, and they haven't made the tournament since 2007. They have arguably the best basketball history in the MVC along with Bradley and Indiana State.

It would have been hard beating out Drake last year, but to have Marcus Domask and Lance Jones last year and have that poor an offense is inexcusable.

I like Mullins, but this was his 5th year and SIU is middle of the pack and just got bounced out of Arch Madness by a very bad UIC team. I am pleased they got serious and made this move.

Wasn't Mullins third in Valley coach of the year? Then fired - ouch

Used to love watching his high school teams at Downers Grove South go up against Dee and Shannon Brown at Proviso East

Seems like he has an eye for talent & development, given what we've seen with Domask & Jones. Would we consider him for an AC opening...if there's multiple?

Hate to hear that. I wondered about his standing in that he had Domask, Jones and Johnson last year and didn't make the tourney. He was one of the best defensive players SIU has ever had and very hard nosed. If he didn't break the steals record he was very close. He would be an excellent ac pickup for Brad.

I see this as a surprising move only because he is a former player and former beloved player at the school. I think Mullins got the ship back in the right direction after the Barry Hinson years but I would agree that their offense was rather boring to watch and they had a ceiling there. Defensively, they were a solid team but definitely offensively challenged. I think seeing how Domask and Lance Jones have done at the B10 level, it's safe to say that a lot of it was probably offensive scheme. I do think that the other Xavier Johnson good play at the high major level if he has any eligibility left. Still surprised by the move though given they were still in the upper half of The Valley again this season. This does show that they are serious about competing. Unfortuately, SIU is a stepping stone type of job. So, to let one of your own go is not a great look. I think Mullins would've stayed around and wouldn't have bolted like a Bruce Weber or Matt Painter did

New AD pulled the trigger. Hopkins was hired the same year as Underwood; and won 2 Pac-12 Coach of the Year awards. For 2 years it looked like Hopkins was going to work out better than Brad. How the turn tables.
Hopkins has underachieved big time, especially this season. That is a solid roster that he has assembled and they have just been mediocre. He's also had Isaiah Stewart and Jaden McDaniels who are both in the NBA and couldn't turn that into much either. I'm not surprised by this move
