Purdue getting hammered by Marquette

Can't shoot poorly and also turn it over 15x

I was just informed Braden Smith was the next Magic Johnson the other day so I'm a bit kerfluffled
It's probably just flabber gas.
I took a job as a kerfluffer, once. And yes, there was an embarrassing incident of flabber gas.

I must have missed the references to Magic Johnson. But plenty on here said he was overrated and his assists would come way down without the benefit of 4 easy assists just throwing ball to Edey. Yet his assists are up by almost 2 per game. Main impact has been on his shooting, where his percentages have crept down some.

I have no great love for Smith, but he’s a pretty damn good PG. Definitely will be a tougher year without Edey, but so far he’s done well.
IMO the eye test is a better feel for the game vs stat line. Also, IMO he should of have had more TO's that they probably gave to someone else.

I was being facetious with the Magic Johnson comment.

Anyhow, if you remove the 15 assist game against their sub-300 opponent he's averaging about the same amount of assists as he did last season.

He's a great college PG, but I also don't think the folks who giggled out loud at him being the preseason POY are all that silly either.

I agree POY was a bit silly. But he was a know commodity, which is probably why he got so many votes. He did average 9.5 assists against the two ranked teams they just played though, which is better than his season average last year.

He's also shooting 35% against those ranked teams.

I think its a bit short sighted from both ends, no matter whether you're a Smith supporter or detractor, to glean much of anything from his assist totals 5 games into a 35+ game season.

He's the primary guy now. He's averaging more assists, but as many speculated his shot attempts are up, his shooting percentages are down, and his turnovers are up. It's just a result of him now seeing 5-10% more usage than he did last year.

I didn’t watch the Purdue-Marquette game. Was the plan to get the ball out of Smith’s hands? Wondering because people seem to be taking shots at him and he did only have 2 TOs and 9 assists.
I’d say yes. When he didn’t have the ball they made sure to cut off anything going back to him and got a ton of steals that way. It was very clear he was the only one with potential to make anything happen late in the clock.

Yeah, losing Jacobsen really hurts that team. Competition wasn’t much, but in only game he really played in he had 13 pts, 7 rebs and 3 BS in 25 minutes. Not bad for a freshman big. They have a 3* freshman guard who looked pretty good against AL. Not so good against Marquette though judging by box score.

I haven’t seen that much of B1G teams yet this season, but from what I’ve seen I don’t see a clear favorite to strike fear into the heart. Didn’t see WI’s win over AZ, so maybe them. But seems like that might have just been their game and maybe not indicative of the actual level of that team. Road wide open for Illini.

I thought it might be because he mentioned being at Michigan and didn’t sound like Howard or Beilein.
Yeah. The PBP guy Chris Vosters was doing a promo for a South Carolina women's game that's gonna be on FS1 this weekend and Martelli mentioned the Philly area high school that Dawn Staley was an alumni of and asked Vosters if he knew the two other famous basketball alumni from that school. Eventually Martelli got to the answer which was Hank Gaithers and Bo Kimble.

Is Hummel the best color guy for the big ten? I like him
It isn't even close, in my opinion. In fact, I think Hummel is the heir apparent for the major national coverage options if that's what he chooses to do. The only thing that may hold him back is he doesn't have a schtick like the big-name guys like Raftery and Bilas have. Hummel just analyzes the game, and the major networks probably won't like that he doesn't create a bunch of narratives and viral social media moments.

(OK, that last line was probably me yelling at a few clouds. But that kind of stuff does get old pretty quickly.)
