If this is true it’s becoming a NIL arm race.

Remember when schools were spending vast sums of money on their training facilities to impress recruits? And when coach coaching compensation was ratcheting upwards every season (still happening). That was as much an arms race as NIL.

This is so not how NIL was supposed to work in my mind. They were supposed to be hanging out at pizza shops signing autographs and selling t-shirts to profit off their name, image, and likeness. Not just be handed bags of money.
We all know what it was supposed to be like, but what else do you think happens when you can now make money with little to no real rules or enforcement of what extremely loose rules there are?

Right now everyone is exploiting it, the NCAA hasn't won an important court case or a PR battle in years, and the NCAA has no teeth on any enforcement items right now.

For most athletes it still is that. Go to the Illinois NIL store and you'll find T-Shirts with the names of athletes from all sports including volleyball players, wrestling, tennis etc. That's probably in line with the NIL you imagined.

But at the highest level of revenue sports, of course the game is being played at a different level, because the revenue being generated is at a different level.

You may not need to leave FS1 tonight. Iowa-Wisconsin now, Creighton/Marquette (always one of my favorite non-Big Ten games each season) after that game.

Man, Iowa is bad defensively. No telling how many Illinois could score if they are shooting well.

Wisconsin doing to Iowa what we did to Oregon last night.

I have Georgetown-Xavier on my multiview. Cooley and Miller wearing identical, Lou Carnesecca-style sweaters. Wonder if that’s a coordinated conference-wide tribute for this weekend.

Way too early BUT are we bringing AJ Storr in this year finally? He can't be thrilled with his minutes and role at KU. He'd have been way better off staying at Wisconsin as wild as that sounds

I think that's a very cool tribute.
I love it. Carnesecca is part of the fabric of the Big East and one of the great characters in college basketball. I actually remember the day Thompson wore the same sweater. He had this enormous grin on his face, and you could tell he was doing it out of love and not malice.

Very unique tribute indeed.

Ohio State looks completely lack of energy and not ready to play.

Idk, that arena of theirs has gotta be the least "energy inflicting" arena in the B10 (outside of probably Penn State and old Northwestern).
