Not to me. They had a solid run in the '60s and then briefly in the late '70s under Bill Foster, but they weren't a destination until Coach K made them that. A single hiring decision. I don't begrudge a top HS prospect choosing to play there given K's stature. Plus, it's undeniably an excellent school (well, at least to the extent that any university these days can be called such.) And they play really solid basketball. And this is not further reason to dislike Duke?
The question on the table is not the rational decision making of high schoolers, it is the inbred advantages Duke has that make them unlikable.
Without Krzyzewski it's kinda Stanford. Highly selective school, meh basketball and football on average (except for some notable departures in the past.) Somebody from there gets up in my grill haughtily about my UIUC degrees in comparison I laugh at them.
I lived in Britain and Canada for a long while. I really dislike the "cut down the tall poppy" syndrome that permeates those places. In America we celebrate excellence, as any healthy society should.
That said, I obviously shed no tears when Duke loses.
