I think some are looking at this in a negative light because of what they've read here. Money may not be the only reason, depending on your skills etc. It also might be offensive fit, coaching style, personal reasons, delusional perceptions about playing time, recruited over, relationships with assistant coaches leaving...

Harris took advantage of what Illinois could offer a player outside of playing by redshirting, knowing he would leave and then leaves another school.

true. but in all fairness, Harris' coach just bailed and the AC who recruited him and to a large extent is his safety blanket is in limbo

Need to recruit higher character players if you want to build a team that stays together for 2, 3, 4 years. You can't recruit players who have proven they are program hoppers and then be shocked when they continue doing it.

The way things appear to be is sometimes more important than the way they are. People talk, negative smoke spreads. Bad reputations linger. I don’t know if there’s fire. I’m just one of the “morons”, but I can still smell the smoke.

If we're being honest there's only a couple different factors at play for the collegiate athletes.

1. Money
2. Playing time (which is a chance to increase value and earn more money both in college and professionally)
3. Playing scheme (which is a chance to increase value and earn more money both in college and professionally)
4. Relationships with staff (which could ensure more alignment with 2 and 3)

At the end of the day, all roads lead back to money whether it be present earnings or future earnings. It is interesting how no athlete ever highlights when a coaching staff has sold them on being allowed to develop a skill set that lends itself to the pros but that coaching staff uses them in the same manner as the previous staff/s.

This is the big turnoff for me. If we're going to pay 2 million in NIL for a player, I want it to be a player who won't give up the points he scores on the other end of the court. And in the B1G, it doesn't matter how good the other players we have are at locking down. Screens force switches, so at some point, Dix would be forced to guard an impact player with too much athleticism for him to handle.
i don't think we are....

Agree, but I can't imagine a player similar to Sencire will fetch much more money going to another school. I think those that have a very high skillset (top 6ish on a team) follow your list

Near the end of the season, Coleman ended up playing center for K-State. The position he absolutely did not want to play.

big difference of 6 mpg compared to 2 high level starters in rez and white but continue on.

smith is probably gonna portal hearing huge offers coming his way
I have to imagine TKR will get some offers too. I’d love him on the Illini, for sure.

Talked to a reporter last year covering Illinois in Omaha. Went into the locker room on the off day and first thing he sees is Brad and Dain playing cards.
That’s it it! Brad prolly hustled Dain in cards…and Dain’s still a little sore about it. No big whoop. /s

To be fair to Dain though, if he wanted someone who wasn't going to coach him at all and let him do whatever he wants, Penny Hardaway is the man. Hard to compete with that level of freedom.

life lesson #8 : when they say it’s not about the money , it’s about the money
