Final Four weekend is a big weekend for coaches. That’s when a lot of deals, connections, and hiring decisions get made. I would expect that many of these discussions will be taking place then and we’ll start to hear more information leaking out soon.

I know this because I had a family member who was a high level D1 assistant coach and he would tell me about all the stuff that would take place.

Throwing this out there with honestly no POV on the players vs coaches offensive ideas….

A significant part of the job of every member of the staff in 2025 is being able to credibly and authoritatively offer counterarguments to disgruntled players who you need to keep onside (and vice versa, diplomatically convey future plans to players exiting).

Has this (and players having their own ideas about how they should be used) always been so? Yes. Is it set to “speedrun” in the NIL era? Also yes.

Are there really any of those? I have been forced to listen to coaches tell me that it's all recycled, nothing new anymore.

On the other hand, choosing WHICH recycled baseline out of bounds play, or which screen-defense method, or which half-court offense schemes to employ against THIS team, this week, but not that team next week ... that does indeed takea lot of judgement and skill, based on extensive experience.

Hypothetically speaking, how much buyout money would it take to pay off Underwood AND get Oats to Champaign?

Again, hypothetically, because I don't see a realistic scenario of anything like this happening.

I'm just rooting for Buzz to Maryland so A&M opens up. Resources to pay a buyout shouldn't be an issue there unless they need more for football.
You do know BU has the 3rd highest buyout in college bball. Texas AM isn't paying $26 million

Agreed, great call by the coach… maybe just his gut instinct, but great call…

Wouldn't Illinois have to pay both Brad's buyout and Oats' also? That is a lot of player salary - why not just pony up $3 mil each for the best 15 or so players in college basketball instead?
If Underwood leaves voluntarily, he technically has to pay Illinois the buyout. Of course, his new employer will advance him the money to pay Illinois.

Is that taxable income?

I understand the desire to see action on the coaching front, but the season is not yet over for all the teams. Could it not be that Brad is giving Kwa, Hamer, etc., time to look for other employment instead of firing them immediately so they can leverage their time at UI into a good situation, rather than have to look for a job as someone that was just fired.
Given that TA was apparently still on salary (when is that done?), does he want to add additional expense at this moment. I expect that there is a lot going on behind the scenes that we know nothing about. With TA being gone, I cannot believe that they are not going to look for at least one other very experienced guy to step into the position held by Kwa, Hamer or TU.
BU has always been very diplomatic about the players and assistant coaches that have left. Maybe it is because he spent so much time as an assistant, but I don't see him publicly firing any assistant coach. If we have learned nothing else about BU over the last several years, it is that he always seems to have a plan and a series of backup plans. I expect that to be the case regarding our assistant coaching positions. I could be wrong, but I don't see BU standing pat on the assistant coaches for next year. I am sure JW will be in BU's office regularly over the next month or two. At a minimum JW will let him know he has some additional budget to pay for some experience if he will go and find it.
We are going to just have to let it play out - no one is getting "fired" publicly, unless they just refuse to move on.

I think the concern is the longer we wait the more players fall off the board.
