1981 Champaign Central, 1985 U of IWhat year did you graduate?
December 1983...what a great football season...until the Rose Bowl 1984 against UCLA.What year did you graduate?
Ah yes...and uphill both waysWhen I was in college we walked five miles in waist-deep snow to get to games at the Assembly Hall.
In both directions. During finals.
We had the BB gun fights without the goggles. Amazingly nobody had an eye shot out, despite the fears of Ralphie's parents in A Christmas Story. This reminded me of a wonderful time from my childhood. I lived in Champaign, and back in the late 70's it snowed so much that we couldn't open our front door and school was cancelled for what seemed like a week. When we finally got out, all the kids in the neighborhood put on our snowsuits and organized a massive neighborhood snowball fight. My backyard had bushes that were probably 5ft tall and ran 40 ft along the fence. They were deep too. The snow drifts allowed us to climb up to the top of the bushes, and it was cold enough that the structure of the bushes froze, meaning we could tunnel inside them and walk along the top. That was the front line for the greatest snowball fight I've ever been a part of, and eventually we put on ski goggles and brought out the BB guns. It was awesome!
Reminds me that the biggest hill in C-U was created from the dirt excavated for the construction of AH.You forgot uphill and against the wind both ways. (It actually may have been a foot change in elevation).
We are the only school todo that. It was an 8 game Big Ten schedule before that.December 1983...what a great football season...until the Rose Bowl 1984 against UCLA.
Fun fact: We are the last school to beat every other Big 10 school in a single season (went 9-0) that year.
He was also our AD at Central. When I was in school we played Lincoln Illinois who was highly ranked in the state because they had a player named Chuck Verderber. He went Kentucky. We held the ball all quarter when we had it. We lost and the final was 9-6. Horrible.Well, after checking Google, he was their coach from 1956 to 1985. Centennial opened in 1966, the year after I graduated from High School. Still have a mind like a steel trap (albeit an old steel trap that is rusty and non-functional).
I in 1957 and Florida was a dirt road behind the Stadium!Ah yes...and uphill both ways
I was doing that in pre-school during nap time.
Bonus fun fact: That year we beat every other Big 10 school in both football and basketball.December 1983...what a great football season...until the Rose Bowl 1984 against UCLA.
Fun fact: We are the last school to beat every other Big 10 school in a single season (went 9-0) that year.
All I can picture is the Rocky IV training montage.I was a high school senior so not around for that one but of course have heard the lore. That inspired me to train diligently to walk uphill in arduous conditions to and from school that winter after Christmas break. Served me well in Champaign, particularly heading into the wind.
[Edit: per @illinibbcz, RIP Deluxe Lunch & Billiards. That fish sandwich...]
The Rocky Log is legend. It was brutal but toughened me up for living in the Six Pack for following year. All I can picture is the Rocky IV training montage.
Thanks, Dan. Just what I was looking for!
