Easy to nitpick our horrendous zone offense …

I liked the twins together. That's when we caught up.
They were very impressive together. The chaos and intimidation in the paint they caused was amazing.

If you can go back and watch or go to the Big Ten plus - just look how the Minnesota offensive players were not even wanting a chance of getting the ball swatted ten rows up. That is what impressed me. The minny players were frozen. It was the intimidation factor.

I truly don't understand the negativity. The game started out fine, but the last 10 minutes or so of the first half was not good for sure. They made the halftime adjustment & put up 43 points in the second half primarily against the zone, which is exactly what elite teams do. And that number should have been closer to 50. Really can't ask for much more than that. Minnesota is tough & extremely well-coached. If they had a little more depth, they would be a problem.

Not really… far from it actually… 1.29 points per possession today

Shot poorly in the 1st half and shot well in the 2nd half… never any issue getting open looks, it just looks better when they go in is all

The efficiency today would be good enough for #1 nationally, here are the current season long points/possession rankings:

Are you saying that we didnt have trouble with the zone? Brad and every announcer said as much!

That's actually kinda crazy. I think there's just a mental block anytime i watch a zone. Feels like the game is just so mucked up and it never looks pretty.

Man I totally agree, anytime there’s a zone it’s just watching 2-3 guys out top hold the ball above their heads and play catch for as long as it takes to probe and get it in the middle or the baseline. Which is how you attack it, but it just doesn’t make for great television when it looks like a 1930s game. Someone about to shoot a granny shot lol.

I just have zero clue what a hook and hold is, so what do we think of the no hook & hold this time on Wagler?

Biggest different between the one on Z and Waglers is that on Z the Minnesota player came from below to wrap up Z's arm. On the play with Wagler his arm was above the Minnesota player's and was in a pretty normal position.

And then the plays you do get it to the middle and the big just has to asses for a few seconds. Mirk had a few turnovers that way and im just like lord this looks awful

USC played bad — 3/20 from deep, 5/14 on FT, so many dumb possessions. And they still had Purdue on the ropes with a chance to win it with a last possession (awful turnover).

Purdue’s last 4 games: 8pt home win against Washington, 8pt home win against Penn State, 7pt home win against Iowa, almost lost to USC today in an ugly, ugly performance.

This thread would be on fire if we had that stretch.
I thought the same thing as I was watching them.

I'm more concerned that we had 2 games in a row where the defense was only ok. I thought the first half defense wasn't good, they looked asleep. better in the second half. need to lock in on that side against Maryland and set the tone on time for purdue

What's hilarious to me is that the "our offense is bad, we had an awful game" people that show up here for every game, can quite literally never support their stance with anything other than ragebait, doom and gloom.... and then when rational posters (like this post) bring up the facts and reason, reality is literally the polar opposite lol.

Ben is 27% from 3 in the 17 games since the first game of the season vs. Jackson State (went 5-9 that game). As much flak as he got last season shooting from distance, he's even worse this season. I think we've got far enough evidence at this level (53 games) to say he's a below average 3 point shooter.

Kudos to Brad for icing him today. Theoretically this was a good matchup for Ben vs. zone. Loved Brad giving twin towers some run together.

It's just unacceptable to shoot that % when you're brought in as a shooter and hitting that putrid clip on wide open looks. The % of his looks that are uncontested is very large. Frankly I've grown long long tired of him launching 3s 5-6 foot behind the 3 line. There's absolutely zero reason he should be setting up that far out. Happens over and over and over again. There's where I see the difference between him and Jake. Jake isn't setting up that far beyond the 3 line. Ben's made strides defensively. Just not an upgrade on other options on that end either.

I'm just thankful Ben's not being relied on as a starter at any point this season. We hit a home run with big Z. Such a game changer defensively with a great offensive game today as well
It's the "wide open 3s" that kill me.

He's hitting 20% on essentially warm up line shots. His D has been better. But a missed opportunity.

Mirkovic has poor ball security and struggles playing through contact. He does a ton well (and I need to remind myself what a normal freshman looks like), but his weaknesses often lead to empty possessions.

really ??.................his strength's led to three 3 pointers in the second half today......his strength's led to shutting down the lefty center when he was defending him today............

why can't this board enjoy a good conference win without nitpicking every little nuisance of a game ??............

carry on Loyalty.........lol....

For me it's because we seem to default to Wagler taking a contested 3.

Wagler is just really really good and hits them at an elite clip.

Look who is third on that list. The Akron Zips. Coached by former Illinois Coach - wait for it - John Groce. We knew he would be a great coach, he just needed time!
