I was talking to the people I was watching the game with when they did that. Apparently Cronin called a timeout right when we scored on the putback, but there's no way he did that literally the second it went in, right? At LEAST a half second had to have gone by, right? The put 4.9 on the clock and I was really dumbfounded by that...
I've seen them do that before. Instead of taking into actual account when the ref acknowledged the timeout they go back and review and go by the most time possible as it goes through the basket giving the team calling the timeout the benefit of the doubt.

I just want to know why Z had only 12min of play before OT. That's it. I can understand a lot of what happened, but I just cannot understand that. Made absolutely no sense during the game, still doesn't make sense after the game. I have criticized the coaching staff extremely rarely, but that seemed like an absolutely insane coaching decision. Infuriatingly insane.

For the best and top rated offense in college basketball, we really have failed recently in OT games. All those ratings are just one metric of performance. Defense sucked tonight also!
It just shows a long standing basketball adage. Teams must play well on both ends of the court. The number 1 offense by metrics could not beat UC:LA tonight.

Very disappointing effort today both by the players and coaches. Brad should have to explain in detail his decision to keep Tomi on the court and bench Z for nearly the entire second half. This and the Wisconsin loss will very likely come back to haunt us bigtime when it comes to our seed.
Seed schmeed, this team isn’t going anywhere in April unless we fix stupid problems like this.

I wouldn't be. I understood the MSU, Wisconsin and even the home loss to Nebraska. I still think this team is absolutely a 1 seed in talent and ceiling. But we let them off the hook in this one. This isn't a catastrophe, it was a bad loss that never should've happened. No excuse for that inbound defense. Z should've been guarding the inbound to force UCLA into coming back to the ball. Full stop. The clock is your friend.
Sure. If you’d like to be disappointed about that inbounds play… I’m all for it. It’s really disappointing.

But those who’d like to act like we don’t have our goals still in front of us are ridiculous.

JMO — I’m not even sure I’m ready to call this game a failure. Again, these were the rebounding stats from this game:

If we rebound with that intensity every game, we’ll win 99% of the time. It’s almost a fact.

Been the blueprint for us defensively for atleast a bit.

That said, you had the no kylan excuse for most of them, and no Andrej for Wisconsin.

This one definitely feels more scary imo. Dent being walking mediocrity all year and legacy games verus us and Purdue sucks
All true - but its not the game was scary, we had the wrong defensive approach. UCLA shot 63% after the first 10 minutes and that was the story of the game. And what that showed is that if we don't take the opposition seriously and play defense that shuts them down, we can score 86 points and lose.

I feel bad for Ben and Keaton. They tried to will us to a win.

Mirk is a freshman, but no excuses for Tomi, Kylan, and Andrej. If those three step up at all during the second half we aren’t talking about OT layups.
Just not enough effort.

I'm going to need a couple of beers after that, and I didn't even watch until the last 13 minutes (championship swim meet for kiddo).
I only watched the FIRST 13 minutes and turned it off, zero confidence they were going to win. Saved the beer money

lol the story is after the 11ish mark of the first half….a middle of the pack B1G team absolutely sh!t whipped us by 24 points.

That’s it. That’s the takeaway from this game.
We mailed it in after the first 11-12min.

Maybe I’m selling UCLA short, but scUM and MSU both held that team under 60.
UCLA is a much, much better team at home for some reason

This.

Either you throw Z on the inbounder to block view (and force them to come back to ball) or double Dent. They did neither.

Staff needs to throw that inbounds D call in the trash. I still don't know WTF KB was doing. Really incredibly inexcusably poor

Our Kenpom Ortg went up further to 132.7. Doesn't feel like it.
I think the offense stagnated too much at time and there were too many early possession 3s without making the defense work.

They really tend to dominate on the offensive glass when they move the ball and force the defense to rotate and then they are out of possession and scrambling to try to box out.

we also shot a REASONABLE % from 3 (31% - not great, but we were constantly in the 20s last year) and only had 9 turnovers.

Truth is, and no one would like to hear it - we’ll win if we play like that ALMOST 100% of the time. Today was just the minute exception.

Hope Mirk is not out because of the clubbing he took on the flagrant. He was a total non factor and we missed what he brings to the table.
