Cool of them to bring out Johnny Gaudreau's kids for the team photo.
I read that the team wanted to whole family to join them on the ice but they would have had to climb over the wall. That was too difficult so they took the boys instead.

If you wondered where the hockey teams come up with Free Bird as their goal song here's the story.

While many Olympic traditions are steeped in decades of history, the rise of Free Bird as the anthem for USA Hockey is a relatively new phenomenon that began as a locker room suggestion.

The song's journey from classic rock staple to Olympic goal song started in late 2024. During a bus ride before the 2025 World Junior Championship, American defenseman Zeev Buium suggested the Lynyrd Skynyrd track as the team's designated goal song. The roster quickly embraced the idea, specifically choosing to play the high-energy guitar solo rather than the slower beginning of the track.

The World Junior team went on to win the gold medal with the song as their soundtrack, cementing it as a "lucky charm" for the program.

Following the success at the World Juniors, NHL stars like Jack Hughes and the Tkachuk brothers pushed to keep the song for the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off. By the time the 2026 Milan Olympics arrived, it had become the permanent identity of the national team. The choice resonated with fans on social media, turning "Play Free Bird" into a digital rallying cry every time the U.S. scores.

In Milan, the song has been particularly fitting for the Americans' playstyle; the fast-paced, relentless nature of the guitar solo mirrors the "all-gas-no-brakes" transition game that has defined their tournament run so far.

I can still hear Al Michaels call it

It was a Friday night when we saw it on TV. But it actually was played about 3 hours before it aired. Simply unfathomable today that a game of that magnitude was not broadcast live on US tv. But it wasn't. ABC wanted it in prime time & the IOC would not budge on the scheduled start time of late afternoon. So it was aired "plausibly live" as a same day tape delay.

I watched it at my grandparent's as a sports obsessed 8 year old & remember it well. Didn't realize until years later it wasn't aired live. Tho I do remember hearing a news report at like 6pm saying the US beat the Soviets in hockey. At the time I just thought that I misheard what was said (cause I assumed it hadn't started yet). Turns out the reporter probably just gave out a spoiler.

IOC didn't have anything to do with the start time. ABC wanted it moved but IIHF declined after Soviets complained that it would have meant a 4:00 AM start time in Moscow.
