Damian Lillard was grassroots, non-circuit guy too and went 6th overall… I think there’s a few

In zero way do we benefit from a weaker BIG. Only time that would help is if we were a perennial bubble team trying to make the tourney and work our way out of mediocrity. That's not the state of our program. We need the best conference, to give us the best competition, to prepare us for March and attract the best talent from the globe to want to be here and get exposure. Why are the same people getting excited about premier non-conference games mad about premier tourney games? Our goal is a championship, not a regular season championship. Jon Scheyer said it and he was right at the time. Let's stop being weak and appreciate what pushes us to greatness.I’d prefer not; rather see every other team as bad as possible while we dominate.
Although he probably won't have as good an NBA impact as Wagler... everyone but Painter missed on Braden Smith, who was ranked mostly 200+. He was a late recruit after Shrewsberry left for Penn State and took a Purdue guard recruit with him. Heck...Smith played for Westfield High School...close to the Indiana Pacers practice facility. It's not embarrassing because he's quite literally the only one ever to have the success he had (in ratio to his ranking).
Every other high major coach could be said to have "missed" on him. He had TWO offers (HM).
It's a complete needle in a haystack situation. What we call an "exception"; not the rule.
Like just for the James Brown.
I guess?I think the difference with those guys is the developed into a stud in their college career..over time..
Keaton was a stud his freshman year, which is to say he was a huge miss for literally every scout and coach.
That doesn’t seem right. USC got the 9th, 22nd, and 28th ranked folks yet are behind us in the rankings. Happy with our class, but generically based only ranking I would take their 3 folks above our 5 any day.I wish 4, 5, 8, 9 and 10 weren't all Big Ten teams as well.

They were studs as freshmen. Maybe not on the level of Keaton but arguably they were even bigger scouting misses (which is the discussion that got us here) because they ended up at mid-majors. Lillard had zero high major offers and Morant got only one, from South Carolina, late in the game.I think the difference with those guys is the developed into a stud in their college career..over time..

Painter has had a few of them over the years. Maybe more than the rest of the conference combined.Although he probably won't have as good an NBA impact as Wagler... everyone but Painter missed on Braden Smith, who was ranked mostly 200+. Matt Painter Details Unique Path to Recruiting Guard Braden Smith to Purdue
Braden Smith wasn't a heavily recruited prospect out of high school. How did he wind up at Purdue? Matt Painter tells the unique story of the guard's path.www.si.com
According to 247 - Edey was the 75th best center in his class, ranked in the 400s.Painter has had a few of them over the years. Maybe more than the rest of the conference combined.
Does it? He'll be the first lottery pick EVER who didn't play on a shoe brand circuit or national event.
He chose to stay hidden in a small public school in Kansas.

First freshman lottery pick ever (yes, I misworded it).Agreed but not what we were responding to which was that he was the first lottery pick *ever* to not play a shoe brand circuit
I will also say that he is from a very big HS in one of the wealthiest districts in Kansas.First freshman lottery pick ever (yes, I misworded it).
Here’s what I was referencing, at around 6:55
Who won TWO state championships Wagler's junior and senior years. He should have been well-known....I will also say that he is from a very big HS in one of the wealthiest districts in Kansas.
Sadly a school that's in big trouble in NIL World. They belong to an ecosystem that no longer exists. What a not-great offseason for Wake Forrest, losing QC and Juke Harris. Both of those guys could be first round picks.
Shawnee Mission NW is not a small public school. 1,800+ students in major school district in metro KC.Does it? He'll be the first lottery pick EVER who didn't play on a shoe brand circuit or national event.
