Illinois Hoops Recruiting Thread

I hope there is a nice surprise coming after the draft stuff(more than just Stojakovic returning) because I'm confused why both of Ty and Lee transferred with the current roster composition.

Currently have:

Vaaks
Coleman(freshman)
Stojakovic
Mirkovic
Tomislav
Zvonimir
Jake Davis
Morillo(freshman)

Jakstys
Zens(freshman)
Brown(freshman)
Landon Davis

I don't see why one of Ty or Lee couldn't have played a significant role on a team with title aspirations with that outlook.

I'm hoping there is a #theaddition(outside of Vaaks) to go alongside the retention. Right now, basically just running it back with Coleman and Vaaks in place of Wagler and Boswell. Which don't get me wrong that is a great place to be, but I still think the goal should be a title and beating the likes of the Duke, UConn, and Florida's of the world. Another guard would probably help a ton especially one with defensive versatility.

Supposedly there was the money to add Blackwell to this group so it should be there to add another piece.

To be fair about the recruiting of Keaton. all video is in back and white (I mean it's Kansas) College coaches don't go there during tornado season even during the winter (why would ya?) and now their football team (pro) gets to keep the same name but is moving states (look it up). No wonder why Self with his "we'll just get Mc'D guys" couldn't make it 100 miles from campus. To be fair though. they did get Peterson. lol

I’d prefer not; rather see every other team as bad as possible while we dominate.
In zero way do we benefit from a weaker BIG. Only time that would help is if we were a perennial bubble team trying to make the tourney and work our way out of mediocrity. That's not the state of our program. We need the best conference, to give us the best competition, to prepare us for March and attract the best talent from the globe to want to be here and get exposure. Why are the same people getting excited about premier non-conference games mad about premier tourney games? Our goal is a championship, not a regular season championship. Jon Scheyer said it and he was right at the time. Let's stop being weak and appreciate what pushes us to greatness.

It's not embarrassing because he's quite literally the only one ever to have the success he had (in ratio to his ranking).

Every other high major coach could be said to have "missed" on him. He had TWO offers (HM).

It's a complete needle in a haystack situation. What we call an "exception"; not the rule.
Although he probably won't have as good an NBA impact as Wagler... everyone but Painter missed on Braden Smith, who was ranked mostly 200+. He was a late recruit after Shrewsberry left for Penn State and took a Purdue guard recruit with him. Heck...Smith played for Westfield High School...close to the Indiana Pacers practice facility.

I think the difference with those guys is the developed into a stud in their college career..over time..

Keaton was a stud his freshman year, which is to say he was a huge miss for literally every scout and coach.
I guess?

Both put up big numbers by the end of their frosh season (they were either cROY or all conference their 1st year) and killed it as Sophs.

The only real distinction I see is they didn't do it in the B10 so it probably wasn't as impressive or nationally recognized.

Agreed but not what we were responding to which was that he was the first lottery pick *ever* to not play a shoe brand circuit

They were studs as freshmen. Maybe not on the level of Keaton but arguably they were even bigger scouting misses (which is the discussion that got us here) because they ended up at mid-majors. Lillard had zero high major offers and Morant got only one, from South Carolina, late in the game.

Painter has had a few of them over the years. Maybe more than the rest of the conference combined.

Does it? He'll be the first lottery pick EVER who didn't play on a shoe brand circuit or national event.

He chose to stay hidden in a small public school in Kansas.
Ja Morant went 2nd overall.
Damian Lillard was grassroots, non-circuit guy too and went 6th overall… I think there’s a few

First freshman lottery pick ever (yes, I misworded it).

Here’s what I was referencing, at around 6:55

Shawnee Mission NW is not a small public school. 1,800+ students in major school district in metro KC.
