Illinois Hoops Recruiting Thread

Forget Adam Miller (COMPLETELY!). I'm expecting QC to have a better freshman year than Keaton Wagler!
That is a ridiculous expectation to set. Our program has brought in players with more hype than Quentin who made a small fraction of the impact that Keaton made during their freshman seasons. Heck, Kiwane Garris had one of the best frosh seasons I can remember before that, and as incredible as Kiwane played for us, his freshman season didn't come close to what Keaton brought to the table last year. Keaton is a once in a generation type of player who had a once in a generation-type of season to lead us to the final four for the first time in 20 years. If QC has 60% of the impact Keaton had, he will have had a wildly successful campaign in Orange and Blue.

Davion Thompson was tearing it up for Meanstreets before USA basketball tryouts. Are we (still) recruiting him?

I'm not suggesting he will be a stopper, but if guys are loafing or not bought in, he will at least show them how to give a sh... and Brad won't hesitate to use him.

Jake's defensive plus/minus was the same as Boswell and Tomi's last year... (3.1) Certainly not an ace, but not the sieve some are making him out to be.

Not that it’s really news, but Andrej just officially withdrew from the draft and is 100% back next season. Before I get roasted that we knew this the whole time, please reread the first 5 words of this post.

Is Coleman really that good or did he get the Champaign bump? /s
Not fully directed at your post, but I really don't get why it would be a good thing to claim this. It literally translates to "I don't think he's that good, but his ranking rise is due to committing to Illinois rather than Wake Forrest."

Every stage he's played on over the past year, he's produced. Had 50 in the state championship, put up 33&12 in the Iverson Classic, was the second best player on the team that won the 17U peach jam last summer... add in his HS team was top 5 in nation.

The reason he was lower in the rankings when he committed (here) is because they hadn't updated in months. The summer is when the services release their final big board.

It was the running joke of illini recruits were always underrated or dropped in rankings after committing and Duke (Blue Blood) recruits always went up after committing.

I think Coleman is the real deal. Think we're gonna love him. To me, it looks like he'll be a real contender for that 5th spot in the starting lineup. All in the mix with Jake and other solid freshmen. I still wish I could find a list of all our incoming freshmen. There's so much activity there, I'm confused. I'm good with Zens and Coleman, but I know there are others.

Our defensive identity is to protect the rim and force difficult twos. That’s what our personnel is best designed to do. Sure there will be a game like Nebraska where a team shoots 50% from 3 and we lose, but those games happen to everyone (look at Michigan against Wisconsin).

Our formula is to protect the rim with our size. As long as we’re not conceding layup after layup, I wouldn’t be overly concerned about the defense.

So, Zens is 104 in the composite. Here’s our history with guys who came in with a similar ranking (between 90-150):

— RJ Melendez, 94
— Luke Goode, 103
— Brandin Podzemski, 107
— Sencire Harris, 113
— DGL, 143
— Brandon Lee, 124
And we’re talking about him possibly being a development project or if he’ll get regular minutes this season. Oh how far we’ve truly come back from the depths. I need to keep pinching myself.

Also I should note, I think ZZ could be a big problem for the rest of the B1G one day! I’m so excited to see what he can become, and even the improvements he’ll make this season. Obviously there’s a lot of talent on this team, so if he Waglers it up and becomes a breakout star, then Underwood & Co. may have tapped into the matrix. But if he doesn’t, it should not ever be read as a knock on his ability or potential. There’s a lot there for him to become a star in the college ball for The Orange & Blue.

If he doesn't break out this year, the chances of him sticking around drop significantly. We will recruit over him. It's wild how much college ball has changed.

This. It's no secret that our #9thMan spot would be available for some Mercer-Jake-Davis level mid major guy.... but the staff sees either Brown / Zens being able to fill that void.

If both are unplayable and give us nothing, hard to think we won't recruit over them.
