Quentin Coleman on the USA U18 National Team

had the pleasure to watch the game tonight, and while there are many fine players on the American team in my (only so slightly biased) opinion, Quentin Coleman looked like the best player on the court

The fact that he has been steadily ascending for a few years, especially in the last year of HS and now hitting his stride as an incoming freshman was already encouraging. The Wagler comps will be inevitable as he has a lot of similarities, etc.

But just like all these recent stars for the Illini, he just brings something different. He's already a great athlete, shooter, etc. The rebounding and all around game is obvious. But it still just seems as good as he is, he's going to keep getting better.

He just got a bump to 5 star status, but he's looking like a top 5 player in this class. This is before he hits the Fletch program, etc. It's probably possible that he's not done growing as well. I'm all in on the hype train.

I'm also encouraged that Illinois has put itself back in the elite category. The potential is there to be at the top of the sport as they keep reloading and getting players of this caliber yearly.

Anyone familiar with the Canadian team? Anyone on that team who either Illinois recruited or is committed to any USA colleges? In other words, any good players? Also, there is a place on the official website to choose an MVP. I didn’t do it yet, as I wasn’t sure if one had to wait until all the games are played, so I don’t know how it works.

Not familiar with Canadian team, but they like us have won all games by blow outs.

I just did a quick look on the FIBA site, and in their 101-48 victory over Puerto Rico, Canada grabbed 77 rebounds, setting a new single-game tournament record and the highest total recorded (since 2006). The North Americans also set a new record with 33 offensive rebounds. Maybe BU, with his emphasis on rebounding, should take a look at Maxime Meyer, who is leading the Canadian team with 10.8 rebounds a game.

Maxime Meyer and Lyris Robinson seem to be the two best players on the team, at least, statistics-wise.

Edit: Never mind, Meyer (7’1”) committed to Duke.

Two things about QC are blessings for next year.
1. His fit... humble yet confident, determined, constant high motor and effort, and willingness to fit with established veterans/stars... is perfect. BU does not have to go searching for a guard with those traits...there are very few if any. There may be some with his skills, but I would not trade for anyone.
2. QC may be the most talented and best fit of any frosh I have seen in my 7 decades as an Illini hoops fan.

But, with all that comes a parameter that must be met. Though I was born and raised in Illinois, I have lived in Missouri for the past 32 years. So...ya gotta show me!! However, with the attitude he has displayed at the highest level of competition available at his age, I feel pretty certain that he will.

You were expecting Meyer to be the next Keaton Wagler hidden gem?

Two stats:

Coleman only needs 2pts and 3rebs in the final game to become the second USA player ever to average a double double for the event.

He also only needs 4 rebounds to have the most rebounds per game by a USA player in the history of the event.

He currently leads all players regardless of country/team in rebounds per game.
