Coaching Carousel (Basketball)

All of the B1G coaches, including Brad, are revoltingly reverential to Izzo. As are all the reporters.

Izzo is a great coach without question, but Nick Saban accomplished twice as much and was still well understood to be a miserable curmudgeon. Why Izzo gets to the Mayor of Basketballtown is beyond me.
The nexus of a manipulative narcissist with sycophantic sports reporters having a pervasive herd mentality.

I’m gonna push back on this thought.. I don’t think conference affiliation has anything to do with coach poaching. It doesn’t matter that there is no Duke in the Big Ten. Duke still exists and they can come take our coach if they wanted. It happened with Self and Kansas.
Sorry to multi-post as I catch up this morning. IIRC, Kansas was Self's white whale that he actually landed. He grew up in the Big 8 when Kansas was the thing, wanted to play there and wasn't good enough (despite being HS POY in OK), and settled for OK State. His college career was contemporaneous with the Danny Manning KU squad that won the title in '88. It was unfortunate for us that UNC opened up in '03 and Roy bolted KU for it.

The connection between those two things is an excellent point.

True, but there's just something kind of irrelevant about NBA coaches these days. It's such a same-y, player-directed style of play now.

Mike Malone, Joe Mazzula, Mark Daigneault and Mike Brown are your last four NBA Champion coaches. None of those guys are meaningful figures in the game the way, say, Dan Hurley is.
But on the flip side, those coaches can just deal with on court and player management. The player acquisition is the ultimate responsibility of other people (I know coaches will clearly have significant input).

Do we have any spots left that BU could snag a player testing his 15 day transfer window options? (Excuse my recruiting ignorance this off-season)

There's 1 roster spot currently open as of right now. @PleaseMakeABowlGame referenced it yesterday in the Recruiting thread (above), but the only one that would probably make sense at this point would be Quinn Costello, considering he went to the same high school as Morillo. He would be an awesome piece to have for the future but I don't know where he would fit into our already loaded frontcourt, and I don't think that kid is coming to college to sit on the bench.

Otherwise I'm not sure there is anyone else that fits well schematically; small guards don't fit the current scheme (Cadeau, Cason, who would both be expecting a starting spot or near it) and IMO we have no use for another upperclassman big. I think the only reason you would bring in someone like Brandon McCoy is if there have been serious unexpected issues that have come to light after the first week of practice with the existing 2/3 guys we have.

Yeah a top 50 kid is not coming to be the back-up, back-up C/PF

Kruger was building a very strong program at Illinois when he left for the Atlanta Hawks job. He never made a secret of fact he wanted to try the NBA. The pay was much higher at the time $10M for 5 years guaranteed. He was making $750k/year at Illinois so he tripled his comp. He was not big fan of recruiting but excelled at X&O's and getting the most from his players.

I don't blame Dusty May for leaving. NBA is the pinnacle of basketball coaching. He already has a NCAA championship. He has nothing left to prove at college level.

The biggest difference is the 82 game regular season plus playoffs. College basketball ~26 game regular season plus tourney.

While Coach May bids a hasty adios and hits the Dusty Trail for Texas and the NBA, leaving his Maize and Blue team to pick up the pieces and deal with his broken promises (especially to new recruits and incoming portal transfers), may we Illini bask in the gloating bliss of knowing this fate could not have happened to a more deserving team. The only thing that could top this is if they brought back Juwon Howard, so we could be assured of beating the Maize and Blue like a rented government mule for several seasons to come.

There are so many funny directions this UM opening could go, but Will Wade could really do the funniest thing now...
That be my vote, if only because there could be no hire that would be riskier. You know Wade would cheat his butt off there.

Might as well continue the cheater U tradition.

It'll be Boynton for at least a year. They'll shop around next season and lock in someone proven thereafter, I'd guess, having diligently scanned his Instagram account for OnlyFans followings/followers.

May its AD remain Warde Manuel in perpetuity, may its scandal-plagued athletic dept never veer from its perfidious course, and may continued turmoil characterize the presidency of the university and the governing Regents.

I mean, LSU's roster is a mess right now and hinges on some guys that are almost certainly not eligible (they may literally not have a #9thman depending on how those eligibility decisions go). NC St. may end up suing LSU over how their hiring of Wade went down. That whole situation is a bit of a mess.

Kinda seems like jumping ship would be the most Will Wade thing a Will Wade could do.

Of course you're right, but a man can dream, can't he?

lol. I was talking to a colleague who's a UM alum as he bemoaned the state of the athletic dept and university leadership. I noted that if they don't lock in Boynton stat, then they're looking worst-case sitch at a post-Wade (v.1) LSU debacle in which they have 2-3 players left, one of whom is a former manager and none of whom are BT players.

BTW, I flew from DC to Minneapolis last week. Window seat and had a splendid view of the west end of Lake Erie, Southern Ontario and the Windsor/Detroit area, then the DTW airport, then Ann Arbor. I looked down upon the Big House and Crisler and wished ill upon the inhabitants. Accordingly, I take full credit for this maelstrom, and Bryce Underwood's impending nervous breakdown. :ROFLMAO:

Very Michigan to still be complaining after winning national titles in both sports in a three year span.

They don't want to win nearly as much as they want to be told lullabyes about how special they are forever and ever.

Thank you Altgeld88 for teaching me a new word in each of your posts...perfidious. I'm going to use it in my golf group tomorrow and watch them give me side eye! Kudos.

It's difficult to overstate how conflicted the alums I meet are about those two titles, the concurrent scandals, and the inability/incompetence of Warde Manuel regarding hanging on to Harbaugh and May. For example, the Sherrone Moore debacle, and many others as egregious but less publicized, in which not even the least due diligence was done during the hiring phase about reputational risks. Some of them fall back on "Harbaugh didn't know because he's autistic/a genius/naive." lol

My colleague, however, sees clearly. He cherishes the titles and also expresses embarrassment at the scandals and inability to keep top coaches (they're now into garment-rending recriminations over Beilein bolting to the Cavs a decade ago.) Oh, and the clown show that the university presidency has become. He noted yesterday when we spoke about this that they're sinking into Spartan territory in this area, and as we all know there's no more horrifying thought to a Michigan Man(TM) than that.

But yeah: Leaders and Best. Always and forever.

I'm glad I saw us kick the snot out them in Crisler last year. (The fans streaming for the exits with ~10 mins remaining when our lead stretched to 15 was as delicious a moment of schadenfreude as I've enjoyed.) I don't need to go back there again anytime soon.

It’s so wild how different the overall gauge of actual reality is when talking sports with people in person than online.

It’s either these are all entirely different people, or else it’s just these same people who are just more reasonable in an offline discussion where there’s no anonymity and some level of accountability versus when they get online and are maybe a lot more “out there” with their various takes.
