Illini Baseball 2026

Need to be able retain more in-state talent. IL is such a strong baseball state.
When you start talking about elite players, you're recruiting against 2 things:

1)The MLB draft
2)Weather

Like any of the Midwestern states, what player, with choices, wants to play games here in March, April and 30 degree temperature dips at the beginning of May vs going to a school in the Southeast, Southwest or West when you can play all year long, comfortably and on teams capable of getting to the CWS. With that comes more visibility and scouts in the stands.

Mis-managed game. I would have pulled the Illinois starter earlier. But what do I know as a 75-year-old baseball and Alfred Neuman fan?

Hartley is what he is. Illinois competes or win a conference championship every 5 years and make the NCAA TOURNAMENT once every 5 years. He has maxed out, it has been time too move on. Then again you can have success like Indiana and Michigan did years ago, college world series, and your coach will leave for a better job.

can some one summarize or post a rendering of what is getting done there ?
I know that they plan to extend seating down both baselines and to replace some (all?) of the seats with seatback chairs. Not sure why they are adding capacity because they virtually never sell out (well there is no admission charge. Guess I should say that they never fill the place). A few years ago we hosted a post season tournament and the stands were pretty full and then we added temporary bleachers. They are also putting in fancier dugouts.

Extrapolating from other threads, I can only surmise that such stadium improvements will lead to poor defensive performance next season.

I'd love to believe in Illini Baseball as a big spectator experience, but the students leave campus the second the weather gets tolerable.
