Purdue 24, Illinois 17 Postgame

#203
BB’s postgame was worrisome. He basically said a break here, a good deflection there, and we’d be ok.
No, that would not be ok! It would have still been a very badly played game and just as discouraging.

The OSU game was much more enjoyable and encouraging than this one would have been even had we pulled a miraculous W out of our shorts.

It's becoming a major issue where every season we seem to have a deflating loss for the season or just a bad loss

2022-7-1 chance for big ten division title is ours and we drop 2 in a row to mich st and purdue at home

2023-get destoryed by purdue then lose right to nebraska

2024-lose to minnesota when we were 6-2

2025- lose to washington deflating playoff hopes then lose to a bad wisconsin team

2026-deflating loss to duke and a awful loss to purdue

I’d much prefer we fully own this horrendous play and state a much much higher standard for this program than hoping a lucky deflection goes our way in order to pull out a miracle win at home vs a bad team on a 16 game losing streak. Isn’t that where we were before we hired you Brett?
I don’t know what can be done to show improvement this season, but I know it starts with the sober acknowledgement
of what we are right now: broken. So start developing & showing us what the young players can do Brett- at this point we all need to see hope for the future. I’d personally rather win only 3 this year and feel good about our key players developing for next year than win 4 or 5 with guys that are gone after this year anyway.
You are at a critical crossroads right now Brett. If you want a future at IL beyond next year, you’d be wise to recognize that, and act accordingly vs falsely believing we just need a few breaks.

You can’t count on getting breaks. We need players to step up and make plays. This team lacks leadership. BB can complain all he wants about nil but we just lost to 2 teams that spend less than us.

I’m afraid the 3 win / 4 win seasons have returned. Appreciate BB giving it a shot but this program will never be Iowa or Wisconsin unfortunately. Love the potential of the freshman class but afraid Illini won’t be able to $$ hang onto them because of the need to go get portal help. No win situation.

Why wasn’t Boyd given a few snaps once the game was clearly out of reach? Invest in the future. Give the younger guys a little hope. Nothing to lose.
So that I didn’t take issue with as the game technically was never out of reach. In fact you pick up the onside kick and you’re only down 7 with the ball and over a minute left.

And that’s the thing- for as terrible as we were in all phases of the game yesterday had we even had 1 additional single drive where we stepped up, you give yourself a decent chance to go to overtime. Wasn’t in the cards. Just an absolute and complete egg we laid against an awful opponent.

Game was definitely not out of reach. The odds are you won’t come back and win but we had a chance with the onside kick. Think about how many times we were in the red zone and came away with no points. We played horrible and still could’ve easily won. At some point this year the defensive needs to get a take away. At this point I would be happy if we could get a sack

Sure, the offense we saw the week before could have pulled it off.

By the time that last kick occurred, I had lost confidence we could move the ball. Houser was uncharacteristically inaccurate all day.

At this point can he be your safety?
There was a lot to like about him coming out of high school but it’s hard not to think Resetich has gotten worse each season he’s been here. What a disaster class of a season he’s had. Seems to no longer know how to field a punt or set himself up for a return, looks even more lost in coverage than he did as a freshman, which is saying something, and when he does figure out where the ball is he’s in such bad positioning he rarely has any opportunity to make the play. He’s been awful.

Also for all the flak Robby Discher got on here for his special teams last season, man did we fall of a cliff this year. Just a poorly coached undisciplined unit outside the kicker and punter who have been quite good.

I don’t disagree with anything you said. But, didn’t Feagin “want” to switch to TE and the staff went with it? (It’s neither here nor there I guess…it hasn’t panned out.)
It could have been good if there was a scheme to actually utilize the tight end.

We might as well have an offensive lineman as a tight end.

The game was never clearly out of reach. We were favorites most of the 3rd quarter. Brett even said in the press conference, even when they scored to go up 14 with 4 minutes left he thought we had a chance.

I agree with you though that Clayton and Boyd should get snaps going forward although I’m sure they want to get a win at MSU so we will see Houser.

I recall Luke Altmyer having a few stinker games when he first arrived here, but I don't think any of them were as bad as Houser's yesterday. He consistently overthrows receivers on deep routes.

I think this team thought it was going to be much better than it is, and the shock at the truth has jarred them a bit.

Yes, definitely. I was optimistic there would be such a scheme to utilize him there. But it sure hasn’t happed.

We played terribly in all 3 phases and lost to a hapless Purdue team at home.
We will not win another home game this year. From 2022 to 2025 we lost a total of 7 home games, we will lose 5 this season.
Something definitely wrong, insufficient nil funding has caught up with us.

We had so much success with Luke in part because he was able to hit on those deep throws. They've been open just as much but Houser has consistently missed on them.

He needs to stop complaining about the nil. Obviously we can always use more. The roster construction was bad. This team definitely isn’t tough smart dependable. The coaching has also been very bad. After firing Hauck it was on BB to make sure the team was ready to play today

Bingo …

They had plenty of money to field a 6-6 team … No f’ing excuse …

Our portal and HS evaluation outside of a handful of guys has been absolute 💩 … It’s time for a refresh in the front office …

As far as the coaching … Paying these guys way too much for this JV level coaching …

You might know this answer.....how much does a defensive line and a solid linebacker corp get paid? We don't have one Big Ten caliber player on either position grouping. Without a reasonably good defense, 6-6 really is the absolute best case scenario and that's 100% pending the offense winning a shootout. When the offense doesn't put up, at minimum , 27-30..... we're going to lose. There is no way that can be projected into a 6-6 season. Offenses can sputter. That can't be an automatic loss for us whenever it does. That's where you HAVE to be able to lean on the defense. We can't.

Now is it the evaluation, the money or both? Whoever is managing the money has to make a philosophy change and they need to build from the defense out. If I HAD to choose between a great defense or a great offense to build with our funds.... I'd go the defensive route 100 times out of 100. Defense travels, defense keeps to in games, defense getting turnovers can hand the offense points and a good, fast, physical defense can play anyone, anywhere and under any/all weather conditions.

Give me a great defense and a running game and THAT is what makes the bottom basement record 6-6. Outside of Bailey, there isn't one player on our roster that would remotely be able to play on a contending team. Not one. On offense.....we have legitimate talent. This defensive line and LB corp is the worst that I can remember in a long, long time.

I don't know where Iowa finishes in NIL spending, but that's the model to winning with marginal funds(comparably). Their QB always sucks, but they always find a solid back, a great TE, a mauling, ugly, mean Offensive line and they pair that with a dominant defense and they win. It works and it has always been what works. Control the clock, move the chains, play great D and every game goes into the 4th quarter with a chance.

The last 2 years, Luke extended so many drives and was very clutch…and Olano was so good, we were able to win nearly all our one score games. They covered deficiencies elsewhere that have never been addressed.

The D has been on a downward trend as Lovie’s guys have graduated/moved on. And as much as I like BB, prioritizing AHen’s next job over our program’s needs is one of the most selfish things I’ve ever seen.
