Illinois Hoops Recruiting Thread

Having Stirtz on the roster was the difference between Iowa and Indiana. Iowa was 10-10 in conference and Indiana was 9-11.

Stirtz was a bona fide NBA draft choice who just followed McCollum from Drake. There wasn't a choice to be had. He fell into Iowa's lap. Indiana was running Conner Enright out there.

If they didn't have Stirtz, that's not a tournament team and if they didn't have him in the tournament, we would have beaten them by 40. He was the only reason that game was remotely close.

If Stirtz fell in Indiana's lap, they would have been WORLDS better than IU. They had more talent than Iowa everywhere, but the PG position and there was a Grand Canyon gap between the two.

All I'm saying is let it play out. Indiana has a ton of money to play with. We're seeing the difference right now. Wabbington was choosing between Arizona(home state), Illinois(features bigs that have the green light from anywhere) and IU has nothing to latch on to but money. It sure looks like we know what won out.
Devries had Wilkerson. He had a scorer but did nothing to help him out. He built a !!!!!! roster much like Woodson. Lot of talent and names but poor fit. It has nothing to do with Iowa having more talent than Indiana or having Stirtz. My point is Devries didn't build a good roster, didn't coach well with what he had, and they had similar records/similar roster rebuilds but one is a much better coach than the other. That's on Devries.

Devries has another chance this year with the roster he built, lets see if he got the right pieces.

Wabbington went to IU, because of the Adidas affiliation. He has been with Adidas for quite a bit and is considered one of their main focuses. The "shoe war" continues, and Adidas was not going to lose this one.

IDK, Wabbington went to IU to get his best chance to play and get paid. I think we are a better fit for those 4 & 5 stars players who still want to prove who they are. I wish he came here, but I hope he ends up a soft stat stuffing 2nd rounder now, on a team that barely makes the dance and goes home early.

When he sees how much they suck this year she sees how damn good we are, not just in practice but I er and over again, right in his face...

He's gonna realize he chose the wrong school. Especially when Brad Mops the floor with DeVries this year!
Let's not pretend that we're in these planet when it comes to making decisions with NIL involvement.

Teams are pushing 7 figure checks across the table to consider. The vast majority of these kids get one bite of the apple when it comes to making this type of money and being set up for the vast majority of life. If a program is willing to hand over $500,000, $1,000,000, $2,000,000, etc more dollars....I don't care if prime John Wooden is sitting across the table. You take the money. Final Four be damned.

Now, if all things were equal and we matched Indiana, that's a different conversation. That's not what's occurred here. These coaches are handed a budget, some higher and some lower than other's. You have to build your roster accordingly.

Realistically, all things being equal, he's probably playing for Arizona, which is right in his backyard and is right there when it comes to being one of the true powers of college basketball year over year.

for those on the League Express (which Wabbington certainly is), it's effectively a one year stopover (more like 9 months). pretty sure his bank account will help assuage whatever regrets he has about his choice.

as another poster noted, his decision was heavily impacted by a shoe brand

Ah yeah my mistake, should have looked at this harder.
There are no public disclosures on NIL - best we get are rumors and tidbits, usually from the agent side in all likelihood as they leak to play the field.

Duke roster is more than that. Their starting lineup has to be up near 17-18mm, Blackwell and Ngongba 8-9mm on their own.

Duke is apparently getting Montgomery and Hiller(28 reclass), already have 5* Kneuppel signed. That's top 3 SF's while they already have Sarr/Howard there.

I honestly don't know how they do it. It's gluttonous. Unless they are selling these kids that they can play the 2 and are moving off Blackwell, I honestly have no idea how they make this all work.

It'll get to a point where if Scheyer learns how to coach, they will be preseason 1 annually.
