Can we discuss Fran McCaffrey for a moment?

Normally I give coaches the benefit of the doubt when they display anger or emotion (Underwood is certainly no saint) because coaching is a tough profession and you’ve got to pound lessons both on the court and off the court into the minds of immature 18-22 year olds. Tough love, as they say.

But Fran McCaffrey is a prick.

Lost in the feel good (if you’re a Hawkeye) joy of Iowa’s improbable come from behind win over Michigan State is the psychotic moment where McCaffrey initiated a creepy stare down with official Kelly Pfeiffer. The announcers laughed at it because it was awkward, and that’s understandable . They should have criticized him because that’s a bullying tactic. We all have our thoughts on referees, but what he did was over the line. And Pfeiffer should have T’d him up again.

Fran McCaffrey is Bob Knight without the winning pedigree. He’s simply an a-hole that too many people cover for because that’s easier than challenging him.

It would not surprise me if McCaffrey’s career ended prematurely with a Woody Hayes type outburst. He’s a grade A a-hole and I hope he either changes or he gets what he deserves.
You know, after hearing everyone chuckle about that yesterday, I was wondering if I was the only person who thought like you did. His intimidation attempt absolutely should have gotten him tossed - I'm pretty sure I've seen guys get tossed for staredowns before. I thought it was sickening.

I just wonder if the ref didn't bother because the game was about to be over anyway.

There's also this not-impossible scenario:
1. We win out (@OSU, Michigan, @Purdue)
2. Wisconsin upsets Purdue at home
3. Maryland wins out (Northwestern, @OSU, @Penn State)
4. IU beats Michigan at home
5. Northwestern beats Penn State at home then wins at Rutgers

You'd have five co-champions with Purdue, #1 in the country a few weeks ago, missing the double bye at 1-5 against the cohort and the top four seeds being, I believe:
1. Maryland (4-1 against the cohort)
2. Northwestern (4-2)
3. Indiana (4-3)
4. Illinois (2-4)

That would be the craziest outcome in a B1G season that has already been off the rails crazy.

Although I'm throwing up in my mouth a little as I write this, it must be acknowledged that Kevin Willard has done a he!! of a job at Maryland so far this season. When my friend and I walked out of the Xfinity Center arena on December 2, we both said that Maryland probably reached its ceiling for the season in beating us that night. (TBF, some of the Maryland fans said the same thing at the time.)

We were wrong. I fear that guy is going to be a pain in our behind for years to come.

While talking about the Iowa / Michigan State game at dinner tonight this comes from my 10 year old daughter - “Fran McCaffrey and Tom Izzo are the craziest coach I know of. When they play each other..that’s a lot of crazy going on”.

No disagreeing with that statement.
That's a funny comment. You should be proud.

That kid is one of the most impressive frosh I have seen in a long, long time...likely best ever. He took some very difficult shots and got nothing but net. Love his game.

Nothing I want more than to see the Illini defend their title, but at this point, both IU and Purdue are teams far superior in so many areas as to make them unbeatable by our guys. That said, this is the B1G and the Illini do have the talent to play with both. Unfortunately, shooting, FTs, bad passes, and mental blunders make the Illni too vulnerable in tough games where every possession is gold. But man, would I get great joy if somehow, they could play strong in all areas and play stellar defense!!! Don't expect it as we have not seen it but the potential is there, just not the habits.
Illinois lost by 3 at Indiana without Shannon. We have as much talent if not more than them.

I agree, I would have put an end to that pretty quick if I was the official. (I admit my officiating career would be short, because I would T up players a dozen times a game... including some of our own.) I know KP is a horrible official, but that was reminiscent of Bobby Knight and I think his career will end up shortened by this borderline psychotic behavior. That is a threatening tactic to show dominance. It is not a reaction to a call where a coach loses composure and yells at the ref, that was calculated and he should get a call from the BIG offices. The man is disturbed....

I thought, "you got one more second, then he's going to T you again" and he would have deserved it. That was worse than if he had kept yelling

Yes, Willard won pretty consistently at Seton Hall, which is harder than people might realize. As we've just opened what is essentially our second state-of-the-art practice facility, they're in a dogfight to break ground on their first. Meanwhile, their games are in a downtown pro arena 20 minutes from campus, where a lot of students are still commuters. It's a pro-dominated area, so there isn't a huge base of local support, and their top recruiting calling card over the years ("We're the only shot at the bigtime for Jersey kids who want to stay home!") is gone with the resurgence at Rutgers.

My take on MD, having lived here a long time, is that its fan base can be fanatical but it's also fair-weather. I'm hard pressed to recall a more electric atmosphere than what existed in the Xfinity Center on Dec. 2 when we played them. Lots of excitement about the new coach, a hunger for a win, and a ranked target in the Illini. And then again I can't recall an emptier arena than a year ago when the Illini played here, Turgeon had quit, and the team was stagnant (though they beat us.)

They love their basketball at MD and are a little crazy about it. Willard will maintain the recruiting inroads in Baltimore, where they really get their best players. He also may begin to attract DC stars, which Turgeon was unable to do. That would really be a game-changer for them.

Folks… let’s go win ourselves a B1G championship… shall we? Here’s the path. View attachment 23698

Just focusing on today 2/26, with sneaking a B1G title by hook or crook as the goal, we'd want:
Illinois over anOSU
Maryland over NW
PSU over Rutgers
My question to the board is do we really need Michigan to beat WI today? I'd very much like Bucky to win that one on principle alone.

Why would we want michigan to win?

I wouldn't think we would, but the post I was quoting had them picked for today's game, in a scenario where IL wins the B1G. Thought maybe there was some 4-D tiebreaker thing going on that I don't understand

True. But they also have to have an Edey neutralizer. Purdue has been able to win with inexperienced guards because Edey is such an immovable force. But it can be done.
Right. You beat me to it on that reply. PU shot 22% from 3 in their last game against IN. Had they shot their season average of 33% (which is based, almost half, on away games), they make 3 more 3s and win this game by about a point. Edey draws double teams regularly and gives many PU supporting players open looks from 3. As long as they are hitting about 1/3 of these 3s rather than 1/4 to 1/5 of them, PU is pretty tough to beat. They just didn't do that against IN and, largely for that reason, lost.

I don't think so. In terms of hanging a B1G championship banner, tiebreakers don't matter - solo titles are extra cool but not in the cards for us this year anyway.

@RabidDawgClassic's example is the path to the #1 seed in the B1G tourney. In order to share the regular season title the two things we would need to happen is to win out and Wisconsin to beat Purdue.

Maryland like Iowa are hard to beat at home unless you are UCLA or EIU.

Maryland seed is going to depend on how their away from home record gets viewed
