Some records are not meant to be broken. Especially when the player trying to break a record set over 3 years starts every game for 5 years.
And with a three point line . . .

The end of that game was absolutely nuts. The game winner and then another unnecessary 10 minutes to review it was ridiculous.
B10 officials' grasp of the rules of basketball is not strong. Also, they may have been running scenarios to determine worst outcome for IL (kidding about this one, serious about the first one). What were they looking for that they couldn’t find by looking at the video for 30 seconds. Battle obviously got the shot off in time and the clock started as soon as the ball was touched on the inbound. There was seemingly nothing else they needed to know.
There is an outside chance of a CBI invite which would give him yet another bite of that apple. Some records are not meant to be broken. Especially when the player trying to break a record set over 3 years starts every game for 5 years.
Yeah I don't what they were looking for. I was watching the end of that game at the same time as our game and the Minnesota crowd was booing as they continued to review it. The refs kept asking to look at it over and over and every replay showed that he got the shot off on time and the clock started when the ball was touched. I didn't even know you could review when the clock starts after the ball is touched. That was news to me.What were they looking for that they couldn’t find by looking at the video for 30 seconds. Haha, I'll tell you:B10 officials' grasp of the rules of basketball is not strong. Also, they may have been running scenarios to determine worst outcome for IL (kidding about this one, serious about the first one).
The late Benjamin "Benny" Louis was from Pinckneyville, class of 1964.Our team went to the super sectional and saw them beat Benny Louis(sp) (played at Illinois) from Collinsville I believe. Cobden had 4 starters 6' 5" and over. They beat Stephen Decatur in the semi-final before losing to Pekin. I believe there were less than 100 students in that deep Southern Illinois school.
I remember the Smedley shot very well. Centralia had three all state players in in Herb Williams, Donnie Duncan, and Ron Johnson. They also had Cliff Berger on the bench. He played at Kentucky later on.
Ben Lewis was placed on my tournament golf team at Urbana CC about 25 years ago. I’d never met him, but he was our A player based on his handicap. When we got to the first tee, he looked at me and said he’d played 5 rounds in the last two years, and I was the A player. In a shocking result, we came in just about last. Though I was at UGCC for another 10 years, I never saw him again. It sounds like he was much better at basketball……The late Benjamin "Benny" Louis was from Pinckneyville, class of 1964.
I am thinking all those tall Appleknockers were brothers and cousins?
Smedley's shot was 1963(and I still think that he fouled Herb Williams). Golden, Pekin and the Appleknockers was in 1964. Cazzie graduated in 1962 and his Carver team was beaten by Stephen Decatur in '62.Likely I am one of a handful here who actually was at that game and still can't believe that not only did Herb Williams allow Smedley to steal the ball with around 10 seconds or so left in the game...but also that Smedley, who played very little for Carver that year, grabbed the ball at the baseline and buried a 10 ft. jumper to win Carver the game. Hard to believe Carver, with Cazzie Russell leading the team, was beaten the previous year when Dave Golden led Pekin to the title over the legendary Cobden Appleknockers. Cudos to anyone who knows what an appleknocker is.
My (three year old ) high school made it down to the elite 8 in 1964 and played pekin in the quarterfinals. Some people had us favored... and I think we ended up losing 81-43! Pekin(the Chinks!) were so fast and good shooters we had no chance, and Golden might have outscored us all by himself. I think that they beat Cobden by around 10 in the final game. The Apple knockers came to the Foxes den and all their starters were at least 6'5" and corn fed healthy
They played a 1-2-2 zone and denied any access to the paint
I swear I remember most of them looked to be at least 25 years old....
Maybe.......kinda foggy , but they were a novelty the first time you would see them play

Good article about Cobden -- lost 2 starters before the season started and still got to the championship game.My (three year old ) high school made it down to the elite 8 in 1964 and played pekin in the quarterfinals. We beat Bradley-Bourbonnais in the super-sectional and they had Randy Crews playing for them. He was a two/three starter for the Illini.
Memories...
I remember that someone from Cobden said that they "blowed the sireen" when they went doen state...
