The way it stands now the Hawks have $9,310,705 in projected cap space (assuming a 71.4M cap) and 7 slots to fill (spare FWD and D-man. That comes out to about 1.3M/player. Depending on Shaw's asking price (and I agree if it's too high we let him walk), that's feasible--especially since guys like Pokka, Motte, Forsling, Kempny, Hartman, etc. are all sub 1M and if we resign Panik (please!) it should be 1.2M or less.

What is disconcerting to me is that the Hawks have spent the last two off-seasons actually becoming a less talented team as a result of cap moves. I know that is the price of success but with Dallas and St. Louis catching up to them (maybe exceeding them?) in talent at the same time has me worried about the future of this team.

The writing is on the wall. Don't worry about the future of the team, it is what it is. Enjoy this next season or two and let Bowman handle the rest.

The hard cap and a lot of success is a beyotch!. We've been hosed with our cap dumps because we had no leverage. Bowman's done well overall, but he's not a miracle worker.

Your wish was granted as well. $875K for Panik. $100k less than last years contract. I'll take it, but i would also have liked to keep Tervainen for essentially the same money.

If the options were to bury Bickell and keep Tervainen at a cost of about $4M or resign Shaw for anything over $3.5M, I would have taken option A. If Bowman can structure some type of back loaded deal in which year 1 of Shaw's contract only takes about $2.5M off the books then I'm all for it. He can then essentially go out and sign another mid-level player for $1.5-2M.

The problem with this plan is that you are betting on skill guys that you haven't seen on the pro level yet. Motte, Schmaltz(if they can get him signed), Hinostroza, Hartman are all promising young players, but are far from a sure thing and most all will need a year or three of seasoning. Hawks are in win now mode and TT was good bet to make a big leap this year. Guess we'll have to wait and see what the corresponding roster moves are.

Panik: great deal.

TT deal: very mixed feelings. Jettisoning a kid with a world of talent for $3M in cap space (Bicks buried in Rockford) doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Bright side is that the Hawks have some flexibility now. Just hope they don't squander it on Shaw.

Would love them to sign Jimmy Vesey. First line slot w/Toews as your center. Would be huge.

That's my concern. I said it in the 2015-16 thread but I had Shaw pegged as gone as he would have been easier to replace for cheap within (ie. Panik)

More like Hartman, but yeah. Please don't revisit cap hell by resigning Shaw to a contract we really can't afford.

Exactly. I think the Blackhawks brass likes Shaw more than Kruger, and they gave Kruger a $3.08M per year contract. I hated that contract, but I think management realizes they probably need to pay Shaw more than Kruger. I love Shaw, but I'd hate to see him get a $3.25-4M per contract. I can't even fathom having 10% of your cap space tied up in Shaw and Kruger.

Kruger >>> Shaw

Don't think the Hawks value Shaw more than Kruger. Kruger got ½ million more per year for being willing to play for peanuts last season. The value of Kruger cannot be measured by his offensive statistics.

I agree with you wholeheartedly but all the reading and info that I've been able to find is suggesting that he's getting a bigger deal than Kruger. I can't fathom that, but that's what people with way more info than me seem to be suggesting.

Undoubtedly, Kruger is a great player at 4th line center. I just don't know if he is a great value at $3.1M

Jay Zawaski's (The Score's hockey guy) is saying the cap will be $74M. The Score, I know. But he's pretty highly regarded. $74M would be great for the Hawks.

Looks like the Hawks have signed UND center, and 2014 first round pick, Nick Schmaltz. Great news. Think this kid makes the team and starts out as third line LW.

I read today that the Hawks are looking at signing Evgeni Malkin

whoa ! sweet

Well - they can't just sign him, because he has a long-term contract with the Pens. So, they'd have to trade some valuable pieces to Pittsburgh. Also, as he makes $9.5 million, I can't see how the Hawks could fit him in without trading Toews or Kane.

I'll play along, but IBIWISI. Seabrook + Anisimov + Pokka + 1st. No way the Pens do this though.

If the Hawks add Malkin to Kane / Toews, they'd be spending 40% of the salary cap on 3 players. I'm not sure that is wise.

Jimmy Vesey sweepstakes begin August 15th. Hawks have a legit shot.

Best guess lineup:
Vesey-Toews-Panik
Panarin-Anisimov-Kane
Schmaltz-Kruger-Hossa
Desi-Lundberg-Hartman
Ras

Keith-Seabrook
Hammer-Campbell
Kempny-Pokka
TVR

If no Vesey, Schmaltz to 1LW and Motte to 3LW.

Boston, Toronto, and Rangers rumored to be the front runners for Vesey. Any idea how much he would cost? If Vesey does not sign with the Hawks would Shaw become more of a priority for the right price?
