Expansion draft rules came out today. Hartman is not exempt. So, the Hawks will lose one of Pokka, Hartman or TVR. Or Vegas could surprise and take Kruger. And, yes, Panarin is exempt.

Next big date: Jimmy Vesey sweepstakes, August 15th. Hawks are on his short list.

More on Jimmy Vesey.

"The pitch from Chicago seems fairly obvious. Vesey would have the opportunity to immediately jump into a prominent role on a likely contender, potentially even on the top line next to Jonathan Toews. Because he's signing an entry-level contract, nobody can offer more than a $925,000 salary and performance bonuses, so this is one instance where factors outside money will presumably impact Vesey's decision."

Money probably won't factor in much on the initial contract (2 year ELC). He'll have a much better chance to hit the A and B bonuses with the Hawks. Panarin hit all his bonuses and tripled his salary.

But the main thing is that he will be set up for a mega contract once his ELC is up (Saad-level light). Nowhere else offers that. The downside is that he won't control where he lands. The thinking is that Stan will give him verbal assurance that he won't send him to Siberia.

The Coyotes 27 yo GM just bought out Antoine Vermette. I think Stan's already called him. 1 year @ $1M, perfect. Hawks will be rock solid up the middle.

Jimmy Vesey derby begins on the 16th. Hawks rumored to be on his very short list.

Looks like Vermette is not in love with the idea of playing for Q again. Bummer.

Welp, so much for Vesey. On to Hudler. Don't know if he's willing to take what the Hawks will offer. Good player though. 30 goals 2 seasons ago.

Hossa was injured last night in a World Cup 2016 tuneup. When I read that he was taken to a local (Toronto) hospital, I was afraid. Turns out he took a puck on his foot. Hurt (like hell, I'm sure), but he'll be ok (i.e., nothing serious).

Keith is out of the WC 2016. Cautionary deal, needs a little more time.

Hard to believe, but camp starts this month.

Team USA beat Team Canada 4-2 last night. Pretty heated affair. Kesler had a blatantly bad hit on Shea Weber, for which he received a well deserved game misconduct. Kaner had a goal and an assist.

The two teams meet again in Ottawa tonight (6 CST, ESPN3). Should be entertaining.

Say what you will about this tournament, but starting the season with 3 or 4 USA v Canada games, is great.

Hockey is really losing me. So many fan-unfriendly issues, but the worst is probably how much the NHL punishes teams that do a good job of developing their own talent. Almost no point in getting excited for new young players when they're just going to be playing in Carolina or Winnipeg in a couple years.

Chris Kuc, Trib's Hawks beat reporter, is reporting Panarin's seeking a 6 year deal for $6+M per. Great news, if true. No brainer.

As long as there is room under the cap. Something tells me that if he has another monster year that number might go up a little. I really hope they find a way to sign him. The youth this team has sent away over the last couple of years has been depressing.

I see Shaw got in trouble his first game. 30 PIM and looking at a suspension.

He was retaliating for a nasty slewfoot that the refs either missed or ignored. I would have been a bit upset as well, if I were him.

That slew foot was indeed nasty. Beagle should get the same or worse suspension as Shaw for the boarding. Dangerous, dangerous play on both counts.

Not sure what the game misconduct was for, unless it was for the boarding. The article I read made it sound like the fighting major came after the five minute major for boarding. Perhaps the extra punch when the guy was down?
