Oregon also had a freshman win against Illinois and Texas, a kid who did not get those "hundreds" of rounds at the course the years before.
Whatever, some people really believe it was the reason. I don't, and I never heard the team use that excuse. I don't think the more local course gives Illinois an advantage this year. I just hope they got the rough rounds out last week, play solid in stroke play, and a guy or two gets hot in match play.
This is unbelievably misguided. That could not have been more of a home course advantage. That is their true home course. A course they play 4-5 times a week. There's nothing here to even compare that to because Illinois plays multiple courses here in town and doesn't have a true home course. They play the courses, at most, 1-2 times per week and that's only when the weather turns.
Add to that, their key player in match play that clinched the semis and finals has been a member at that course since he was a little kid. He was ranked outside the top 500 in the world amateur rankings at the time. In fact, Wise, who admittedly was a stud anywhere, was the only player inside the top 300 on the team. And they beat back to back teams with 4 players each inside the top 100.
This all just alludes to course knowledge. It doesn't even begin to factor in the fan support they had. Not a knock on them, they played great and took advantage of the situation. But look at how they did the rest of the season. It's absurd to say they would have won at any other course in the country, or even made match play for that matter.
