2017-18 Illini Golf

Women's team has really progressed the last two years. They came within a few holes of winning the Big 10 title last week (were tied for the lead with MSU and Maryland having three holes to play).

It's unfortunate that their best golfer from last year transferred to Wake Forest. It reminded me a lot of the James Lepp situation early in Small's tenure (except Liu is not nearly on the same level as Lepp).

Here's a good article about the team from earlier in the year:

They lose four seniors from a seven woman roster but have a real solid (five person) recruiting class coming in.

That is a great article.
BBall coach BU has said many times that he was waiting for his team to come up with some unique identity to pull them together, just as our lady golfers have done, according to the article. Hope our incoming 43 BBall recruits see this article and are able to figure something out for themselves!!:)

uh, Dear Ladies and Germs,
Are we officially not interested in our men's golfers this season? Pretty quiet for having the Big Ten tourney coming up this weekend.
Just asking.

The men's team is having a good year but national expectations are tapered a bit. I think they'll advance out of regionals but I don't see a National Semifinal type of finish.

I'll have to check out the women's team when they're in town for the regional competition.

Don't we sort of have to expect the men to do astonishingly well, if only so that they can lose to the OK State team playing on their home course? Its what we do.

You are an astute Illini fan. I think we can pretty much bank on your scenario happening.

Good point. I'll second that. Would really like to see Coach Small's team make a nice run over the next couple of weeks.

There is probably no bigger home field advantage in all of sports than there is with golf. No team should be able to play for the national title on their home course.

Maybe there should be another “Illini Rule” added by the NCAA just like the rule that was added in basketball where a team could not play a regional game at home after the Kentucky-Illinois game played at Rupp with our Efrem Winters, Bruce Douglas, Tony Wisinger, et al in March of 1984...

Ohio State is cooling off and still has a few holes to play, but either Feagles or Tadiotto (or both) is going to have to step up in order for this team to compete with the best teams in the country. Hardy, Meyer and Baumgarten are all playing well right now.

Agreed. Feagles is very talented but struggling as of late. You never know what you're getting with Tadiotto.

Illini off to a good start this morning. Feagles bouncing back with a -3 on the front side and no one over par. Still trail OSU by a stroke.

Looks like Meyer for bogey on 9 to put us 1 behind Ohio State, encouraging starts by Feagles and Tadiotto considering yesterday

Illini now in the lead by 2 at -9. Certainly appears to be a two team race with OSU. PSU is in third at +1.

Great day for the Illini !!!! 12 Under on the day and in the lead by a stroke. Big bounce back by Feagles as he shoots the low round of the day at 6 Under 64.

Let's finish it off tomorrow.... :shield:

Very impressive that of the top 19 players after two days, 9 are from either Illinois or tOSU. 50% basically of the top 20 from two schools. Dominance.

With everyone having made the turn, tOSU is struggling and has come all the way back to even par for the tournament. Illinois has given a few strokes back, but leads by 8 at 8 under on the tournament. Can't count the chickens yet, but I can hear them!

Good job by Feagles especially to turn it around after struggling early on. Nice finish.

Great team win. Hardy's win was special. Everyone else struggled mightily down the stretch but he played well enough to win. And birdie on the last is the way to finish Big Ten career in style. On to the Regionals. Never know what happens in golf. If they get hot they can take down anyone. One step at a time.

Let us not forget one of the "et als" - Doug Altenberger.

Yes, playing KY at Rupp in a regional was unfair. But KY beat ILL in December by two or three points in Champaign. Still, it was a credit to the Illini that they almost pulled it off at Rupp. Kinda bogus officiating at the bitter end as I remember.

Even though Rich Harvest Farms last year would have been considered by some to be a "neutral" site, I disagree. Hardy and Meyer had played multiple rounds there leading up to the 2017 NCAA championship. And Illinois had quite a gallery. It's quite possible this was the closest Illini golf will ever get to having a home-field advantage - unless RH is again selected as an NCAA championship venue.

The important thing is to congratulate the Big 10 champs! Hardy was tough, the young guys hung in there. Meyer and Hardy, lead the way at the regional and deliver us another final four!

Rich Harvest Farms is closer to NU, NIU, heck even Wisconsin Madison (Does UW have a team?) any of which could claim home course advantage.

Was Illinois considered the host school? Is Ok St this year! Is any team considered the host for the NCAA finals?

Actually, NIU was the host school at Rich Harvest Farms.

Yes, RHF is the home course of NIU and they were the tourney hosts. They provided A LOT of staff and organization to make the two weeks come off smoothly in the face of pretty lousy weather.

That doesn't change the point made above by OleoLeahy, however, that Hardy and Meyer had played there quite a few times and knew the course well. Also that Illinois had a big turnout (Northwestern did also, by the way, for the ladies) I didn't know that before his post, but it doesn't surprise, given where Hardy in particular hails from.
