2017-18 Illini Golf

Yes, RHF is the home course of NIU and they were the tourney hosts. They provided A LOT of staff and organization to make the two weeks come off smoothly in the face of pretty lousy weather.

That doesn't change the point made above by OleoLeahy, however, that Hardy and Meyer had played there quite a few times and knew the course well. Also that Illinois had a big turnout (Northwestern did also, by the way, for the ladies) I didn't know that before his post, but it doesn't surprise, given where Hardy in particular hails from.

There is no comparison between that and the home course advantage that Oregon enjoyed the year they won.

Not only did Oregon play on their home course, but the player who clinched both the semifinal match and championship match grew up in Eugene. His mother is a professor at the University of Oregon and that was actually the course he had been playing his entire life, so he knew it better than anyone -- except his coach, Casey Martin, is also a Eugene native who played at Oregon.

So you had both a player and a coach who were playing for the national championship on a course they had played regularly their entire lives. That is as big of a home course advantage as a team could possibly have.

Yes. This was pretty much the most Illinois thing ever that we ended up playing them on their home course the year that we probably had our best ever shot of winning the NC. :(:tsk:

Bad word choice in my previous post. Should have said " a few" instead of "multiple" times Hardy and Meyer had played RHF. I didn't mean to imply they had spent their summers there before the NCAA Championship.

To my knowledge both played two rounds at RHF during the 2015 Western Amateur and 3 rounds during the 2015 Northern Intercollegiate. They definitely got some course knowledge. But in no way was it a home-course advantage. Some Purdue players also played RH in the Intercollegiate and again in the 2017 NCAA. But Illinois did indeed have a big following at RHF.

Yes, Oregon had an advantage. But you've got to perform in your regional to make it to the championship.

No way should a team ever be able to play its home course in a regional.

I just want Illinois do well again this time around -- especially for Dylan and Nick and all the great golf they've played as Illini.

The Illini have a great chance to advance again. That said, Tadiotto and Feagles must be more consistent going forward.

I agree with Illinifaninwi.

Looks like Illinois has some real talent coming, including another Belgian. Keep that pipeline open!

As long as Coach Small is around, Illinois should remain a national power. I can't believe the job he's done over the years.

Just wish we had Lipparelli this year. But he transferred to Italy! Oh, those transfers. I wish him well.

Regional assignments will be announced tonight on golf channel. Hoping the Illini get Oklahoma. Might as well get used to it, the Nationals are just down the road.

Regional at Oklahoma
Nationals at Oklahoma State. Hope that clarifies my post a little

Illini to Columbus as #2 seed. #1 seed : Okla State. Bring them on. Remember: you don't have to win the regional as in basketball to advance. Finish in top 5, I think.

The thing that irked me during Golf Channel coverage a little while ago was that Ryan Somebody said when Dylan and Nick graduate it's the end of a dynasty at Illinois. Oh, yeah? I think Coach Small (not to put any pressure on him) will have something to say about that.

Sounds like Ryan Somebody hasn't been paying too much attention to Coach Small's staying power near the top of the national rankings over the past number of years, and the recruits he has coming in next year.

Amen to that. Yeah, the team, on paper, looks like it's weaker next season. But what dynasty was Ryan Somebody talking about? The powerhouse golf team in the BIG? National rankings? Illiniois will be a factor in both down the road. I believe.

The thing is, I hope, Hardy and Meyer pass the torch to the young guys with a little help from Mike Small.

That's what they said when Langley and DeForest graduated ... and that was seven years ago.

You'll have Feagles, Baumgarten and Tadiotto as juniors, O'Reilly and Chopra as sophs, and incoming recruits, Kuhl, Armbrust, Dumont de Chassart and Gillard.

They will be young, but the three juniors have a lot of experience and O'Reilly got a bit of action in this year as well, I believe. Dumont de Chassart is ranked around 200 already in the Amateur World Golf rankings, he seems to be the most ready to play incoming frosh.

Here's a link to the incoming guys...

How many teams advance from a women's regional?
I seem to recall that the men's and women's numbers are slightly different.

Way to go BTN!

Got home ready to watch Men's Big 10 championship at 4 p.m. The info bar at bottom of screen said coverage was from Baltimore CC. Yes, the site of men's competition! Oh, boy!

Except it was women's championship, a repeat. Good for the ladies; Illini were strong and are getting better.

2007 Illini vs. PSU, then Illini vs. Wis in football is scheduled at 5 p.m. I bet there'll be more lacrosse coverage instead followed by more paeans to Ohio State and Michigan.

Moved up to T6 after day two. Pretty tight competition, it will come down to heart I suspect

Pretty good round for them. Those last two holes appear to be very tough, based on every teams' scores.

They could still move up to T5 before this round is over, as Oregon State is likely to lose a few strokes on 17 & 18.

It looks like it will basically be 6 or 7 teams fighting for those last 3 spots tomorrow. For the most part, teams are sorting themselves out by seed. Let's hope that continues tomorrow.

What's really hurting Illinois is that their #1 golfer is playing like their #5 golfer this tournament. They really need to get something going or they are going to miss out on a great opportunity to finally qualify for nationals

I am pretty sure they have a tie-breaker system, such as counting dropped scores.

Found this from a 2016 article:
Introduced this year, the new tiebreaking system – which was revealed last summer, according to the NCAA, and touched on again this week in the championship handbook and at Thursday’s coaches’ meeting (although many coaches said they just found out about it this week) – essentially makes it a five-count-five format for the teams involved. The team with the lowest total of its three non-counting scores advances.

Contacted BIG in Park Ridge.

Men's golf highlights are today at 3:30 CST with repeats later tonight. Quick response from communications young lady who said technical difficulties were responsible for yesterday's glitch.

Speaking of quick responses: on a whim, I emailed Coach Sloan (I'm not a stalker; her email is right on the Illini golf website) and wished her and the Illini well. I thought: who is this Coach Sloan, where did she come from? Revelation: she's Renee Heiken! I've got to follow Illini golf more closely.

She got back to me early this morning to say thanks! Wow!

Go ILLINI!

P.S. I've read Stone Creek, home course of Illini golf, may be in financial trouble. Is this so? And if it closes, where do Illini call home - the old orange and blue courses?

I live in DeKalb and want to get down there to check out Stone Creek. In an article, the owner said SC would remain open this season.
