2017-18 Illini Golf

We're a 5th golfer away from making noise at nationals. Gio is going through a rough patch this week.

Do you throw Brendan O'Reilly into the mix at nationals?

The good thing is they will have a little time to work on things before nationals. Maybe Gio can get fixed or they can get O'Reilly ready to go. The new substitution rule at least gives them options.

The race to watch here is for the individual title. Hardy and Feagles are right in the mix.

It doesn't look like there will be any suspense at the cut line for this Regional today. It's nice to see at least one other Big Ten team make it.

One thing to follow in the other regionals - the #1 and #2 ranked golfers in the nation, Justin Suh of USC and Collin Morikawa of Cal are both in danger of not making it to nationals.

what's the new substitution rule?

It used to be that substitutions weren't allowed at all. But after Texas' top golfer got injured in match play a couple years ago and it maybe cost them the national title, they decided to allow teams to bring a sixth golfer that they can sub in during match play.

This year, they expanded the substitution rule to include stroke play at regionals and nationals as well.

Interesting. I'm sure O'Reilly is on site. Between the two of them, one of them should be ready to go by nationals.

Feagles is wearing down on the back 9 today.

Nick Hardy still in first all alone at -4.

Feagles, Meyer and Baumgarten all tied for 9th at E.

OK State have some solid, steady golfers. They will be tough to beat at Nationals. But hey, anything can happen in match play, head to head!

If you get to match play.

Except for Hardy, disappointing final round so far.

NWS said fog in Columbus a little while ago. Worse weather than that?

Not a great finish, but they got through to nationals easily. That should never be taken for granted.

For instance, these teams are on the verge of being eliminated today:

#4 Georgia Tech (already eliminated)
#6 LSU (already eliminated)
#9 California
#15 Arkansas
#19 Southern Cal

A little stumble by Hardy at the end, but solid play by the top 4 this week. Survive and advance. Work on the wind shots, as I'm sure Stillwater will be windy.

On a positive note, Gio played the last 4 holes in 2 under. Maybe he figured something out!!!

If he did figure something out, I wish it was the last 4 holes yesterday, so he could get back at it tomorrow. Instead of waiting until next Friday to play competitively.

Updating my earlier post ...

#4 Georgia Tech (already eliminated)
#6 LSU (five shots back of last spot)
#9 California (already eliminated)
#15 Arkansas (making a charge, but still one shot with a few holes to go)
#19 Southern Cal (technically still alive, but pretty much toast)

#10 Auburn is going to barely qualify with 1 or 2 shots to spare

If LSU misses the cut, that would be two #1 regional seeds eliminated (Georgia Tech was a #1 seed)

Looks like Vandy played their way in today. Always a tough team.

Add #20 South Florida and #25 Wake Forest to that list of top 30 teams that didn't qualify as well.

Arkansas rallied to sneak in without a shot to spare.

They displaced #22 Florida State in the process.

If LSU catches fire and eliminates Oregon, I'd be ok with that. If one thing the past couple years have shown, it is that Oregon builds for match play.

LSU needs to gain 5 strokes with 9 total holes to play across their 4 low scorers for the day. Would need some help from Oregon.

I think Feagles and Baumgarten are showing that the cupboard won't be bare next year and beyond.

The team really took offense at the remark by the guy on the Golf Channel that the dynasty would be ending after this season :)

Plus, Illinois has some HS state champs coming in, Tommy Kuhl being one.

I hope Giovanni recovers; need him real bad at Stillwater. If he'd played closer to par, Illinois could have won the regional. Oh well.

I hope Coach gets him ready. Forget about the regional.

Quesion: how do you prepare for Karsten Creek if you've never played there? Aerial tour?

Either the Norman/Columbus regional sites are on harder courses than the other regional sites or the teams just aren't shooting as well. There's some pretty good team scores being put up at the other 4 sites today.

Just heard a Golf Channel lady say Scarlet was the "hardest course" of the regional sites.

She also described Illini as "annual contenders." Let's hope it continues to be "perennial."

No, I wouldn't if I were coach. Could be devastating to Gio. It would also be a lot of pressure on O'Reilly.

Giovanni is only a sophomore. Let him work out the kinks and get down to business in Stillwater. I'm behind him all the way. He's earned it.

Gio was thrown into it last year as a freshman and was 1-1 in match play. I'm sure coach will give Gio every chance to get it straightened out before the Championships. He would definitely be the better choice if he's ready to go.

But I think you also need to have O'Reilly ready to go as well. O'Reilly seems to be more inconsistent in his scoring, but he can also get pretty low as well.

They need one of the two if they want to make noise!
