Seems pretty quiet on that front. My guess is that the roster is likely set unless someone new becomes available.

Honestly, I think I'm Ok with not adding a 5th year big. Next season is all about development. We will be heavily reliant on freshman in the backcourt, so why not get these young frontcourt guys on the court too. My goal for next year is to see our young players improve over the course of the season, anything else is gravy.

There is still a lot of time left so we could potentially add another player. Jon Octeus transferred to Purdue in October after being denied admission to UCLA and was able to play that same season.

If the staff is in "win now" mode, which by all accounts they are and should be, I think they would still be scouring the market for a 5th year transfer big. I'm sure they aren't confident with 2 raw freshman as the frontcourt depth and would sacrifice playing time/development for someone is ready to play.

I also heard a whisper on this. Apparently another Euro? Very quiet stuff at any rate.

Another kid with 4 yrs left? At this point, barring some insane talent, I'd be upset. Of course, theres always a chance we get a guy transferring out or leaving for some reason (whens the last time our roster is exactly what we thought it would be a year in advance?), but to me, theres 5th year guys who can contribute, and borderline recruits who should probably not be on a P5 roster.

I'm all for 5th years, zero risk, all reward, but spending another scholly on a guy this late doesn't seem like the right move given how we've taken a mid major recruit and a relatively unknown euro guy.

The timing suggests that the weird veiled reference I heard was a backup to Matic. It's probably nothing, and chances are decent we've got our final roster for the upcoming season.

I dis agree we took 2 kids who really improved their SR year, one who did so after already committing and one who didn't commit and blew up and everyone went after. As far as or Euro guy, he was playing on a pro team and plays for his country, just cause no one in the states was after him doesn't mean he isn't good enough to play

Agreed on this first part, I think the wildcard here is someone else transferring out. We just never know. But on paper, 2018 looks like a nice class, and to have two rides, to me, sounds awfully light. I'd feel better with 3 or 4.

Seeing as how negative I'm about to get, I'd like to point out I'm 100% behind the decision to get Greg and Matic. That being said, Greg is still a huge crap shoot and I think its foolish to believe he wasn't at least or 4th or 5th option. A similar story with Matic. His stats while playing on his pro team were minimal at best, plus a lot of teenagers play on pro teams. His only significant stat lines came from playing for the U18 and U17 national teams--along with other teenagers. I get that offers and stars don't mean much, but these guys were backup plans. I'm still concerned if either Black or Finke go down.

On your point about Mark Smith (I'm assuming you're speaking about him), he is the exception. He showed he is an extremely gifted player. So much so that I wonder if he's gonna stick around for 4 years.

Still holding out for a grad transfer big, but I disagree on your estimates of the our last 3 recruits. I think all 3 will have immediate impact, to s twhat adegree may vaue freshman rry, but they will make major contributions. Ready for them to start playing don't !:illinois:

They will make an immediate contributions simply due to the fact that they will be forced into a position to do so, and not necessarily because they are ready to play those kinds of minutes as true freshman. Smith, Frazier, and even a healthy Damonte could/should be counted on to play positive minutes as true freshman. Greg and Matic? Not so much. That's not an indictment on them. I have faith that they will be good players and major contributions down the line but the reality of the situation is that they wouldn't be playing significant minutes next season if we had any sort of big men depth.

1.Understand that most bigs straight out of high school don't contribute much their freshman and sometimes their sophomore year unless they are top 20 recruits. (I personally thought that tilmon was only going to play 10-15 minutes per game this year, and might be less at Mizzou if Jontay reclassifies)

2. Live with it.

I am far from an expert on these things and my following assertion may be way off base, but as I understand it, we aren't recruiting "traditional" (if there is such a thing anymore) bigs. Greg and Matic are more athletic. Perhaps because of this they may not need the development that traditional bigs need. Not saying they are going to step in and play major minutes but maybe they will contribute and play more than bigs are usually expected?

Wait, shouldn't this be in the "Recruiting" thread?

Yup. Both are probably going to play 8-10 mpg because we simply don't have anyone else. After Black and Finke, they are it. Though I guess Kipper will help out some at the 4 also.

I didn't take that as that negative. I took the time to watch a lot of full games of Spicy G and the improvement the kid made from his JR to SR year was pretty nice to see. I agree he wasn't the first guy they were after, But watching those games he really reminded me of Leron, only a couple inchs taller. I do not expect either FR big will get tons of time, but even if they both could combine for about 20 mins that a big help. and who knows by mid big 10 season one or both might be giving around 15 or so.

Hmmm I don't think so personally.

Smith had a more rounded game and actually stuck in the NBA for a number of years. Maybe JCL blossoms but don't see it thus far.

I couldn't find Smith on NBA.com. From what I could find, he was signed and waived 4 days later by the Celtics, and only ever played in the d-league. Seems like he was an insurance policy they didn't need. He's had a good career on a variety of teams around the world.
