100% agree. If our best option is Martin we should just give Groce one more year to prove he can coach. I would hate to be locked into another 5 year plan with Martin. He's better than Groce, but his ceiling is mediocrity.

That's basically what I'm saying. Let Ford go hire Deon see what Groce can do with these freshmen coming in and not see the Martin experiment. If can get better than Martin go all in but if it's Martin say here is your only chance. One year your big class but get rid of Ford hire Deon.

If there's a solution, it's not hand Groce the keys another year to bury this program closer to complete irrelevancy. If Cuonzo is the best you can do this year, he's the best you can do the next, if that.

Not a lie at all. As a coach you can preach the right things to do every single day and incidents like this will still happen. Further, when incidents do happen it is always interesting to see how a coach will handle it.

Nunn - Was found guilty of his charge and Groce kicked him off the team as expected.

Tate - Waited for the legal process to play out and handled it as expected.

Black - Legal process played out and served him with a punishment of community service. Additionally, Groce punished him for the beginning of the season and gave him a chance to earn respect back. Furthermore, the way Groce handled this situation may have positively impacted Black's life more than he ever could have imagined as he seems to get the bigger picture in life.

When Groce talks in his press conferences its always "We need to do better or WE messed up" speaking on behalf of a team and he holds his guys to high standards.

Haven't seen Groce in the news about getting a DUI, having an affair, providing recruits strippers or giving out other impermissible benefits. Overall he seems to be straight edged and in it for making these young men grow as people and not just basketball players.

This is just a big lie. John Groce has brought more bad press to our beloved University than any previous U of I basketball coach. Several players have gotten into trouble, and now we're getting laughed off the court.

If JFG is let go...

Has anyone thought about Jerrance Howard? Unless JW can hire the Lovie Smith equivalent of a bball coach, I don't think it's crazy to at least put him in the consideration set.

It's sad that I don't get upset over Illinois losses anymore, I just don't understand it. How far has Illinois fallen? Whitman wants to win but he's allowing losing to happen consistently.

I admit to not knowing much on this topic, but what I've read on here includes:
JH was the fun coach, the one the guys like to come to (obviously, Bruce was the discipline). I think the head guy can't be the fun guy, sorry.
JH regularly undermined what BW told the team.

I think he's been over appreciated by the board, but maybe i don't know how to evaluate assistants. care to help me understand?

Nobody without head coaching experience should be considered for this hypothetical vacancy.

why would he leave UVa for Illinois. This is a lateral move at best

From the midwest,
tired of Dook, UNC, Syracuse, Louisville getting all the limelight
loves corn, doesn't love tobacco?
Just needs a change?
The midwest farmer's daughters . . .

Lol. I went to take a shower and come out and my wife tells me my phone has been beeping a lot. I told her it was the Coaching Carousel discussion. We need to laugh instead of crying at this point.

What is Whitman supposed to do?
Fire Groce in the middle of the season? Seriously? What would that accomplish? Send an early message to our recruits to look elsewhere. That would be brilliant. Turn over the keys to the assistants that we are underwhelmed with? Again, brilliant.

Exactly what do you think JW should do mid season? My goodness

Tony Bennett will simply use any overtures from Illinois or any other P5 program as leverage for a raise at UVA. UVA is better than the Illinois basketball program in every respect. Don't fall for the banana in the tailpipe.

I can definitely see that. However he was pretty young back then so my hope would be that he has grown up. I think he could recruit the Chicago and ESL areas very well. He has a passion for the school obviously. And he has been able to grow on a pretty impressive coaching tree.

All I'm saying is that he should be in a consideration set if JW can't make a big time hire. That is, unless the rest of you on this board feel like we should hire another mediocre MAC coach again.

I think if JW is going to fire Groce, he better have a damn good idea of who's taking the job. Not just a list of people he likes.

It might send a message to the recruits that Whitman and Illinois are seriously committed to winning. Right now the message is we don't care how inept Groce is - he's our guy. If I were a recruit, I would be afraid they'll bring back Groce next year and I'd never see a NCAA bid in my 4 years at Illinois. Maybe I'd look somewhere else if Whitman is determined to ride this train wreck...which is what Groce is. Hard to make one long for the good old days of Weber, but Groce has turned that trick.

1. That's not the message that this is sending.

2. You need to remember that these guys committed to Groce and his staff, firing them is not going to make them think great things suddenly.

3. If you fire them now, then they will almost certainly ask out of their LOI and they're gone.

4. If you fire Groce after the season and you have his replacement lined up, you at least have the chance to salvage the recruiting class by the new guy selling the recruits on sticking. You don't have anyone to sell that if you fire Groce now.
