Stevens took 2 BUTLER teams to the Championship game. What are you talking about? Bennett is great but Stevens was/is the boy genius.

Stevens and Bennett are like Beyonce and Kate Upton. Why argue? You take who you want and I'll be damn happy with who's left:thumb:

People keep mentioning Chris Mack. I think we have a better shot at Mick Cronin, who is a better coach to boot.

He's gotta stop wasting his life in the AAC at some point, right? Alma mater or not.

I also really wonder whether Greg McDermott is a possibility.
McDermott's been good at 2 mid majors and a flop at 1 big time time job. You'd have to decide that his time time at ISU wasn't representative.

You would have to decide that, yes. You would also have to consider that the best recruit he ever landed was his son. (And he's out of sons, for the record)

But man, this Creighton team is something to see. The evidence of being well coached is all over them, they run tremendous offense and play with instinct and confidence.

It will be interesting to see how they do without their PG.

Archie Bunker

Someone mentioned Archie Miller as a replacement for Groce. Right now, I'd take Archie Bunker over Groce.

Groce could recruit the Fab Five and he still wouldn't have a winning conference record. High School recruits don't win games, if they aren't properly coached at the college level.

Agree. They are a really good looking team. Would he come? After ISU would you want him to come? That's on JW to answer.

Lou bought himself more slack making 6 of 9 NCAA tourneys and one final four at New Mexico St. That 1979-80 season started out on fire until Steve Lanter injured himself and essentially played on one leg. Most importantly however Henson was hitting homers in recruiting and was returning Eddie Johnson and Mark Smith and about to add James Griffin, Craig Tucker and some guy named Derek Harper. Things were progressing

If Groce Had Lou's New Mexico St. record while he was at Ohio, I am betting he would get a little more slack

And there was no ESPN, no BTN, no $100 million dollar athletic budgets, no social media back then. So yes, much less pressure to deal with.

That's basically what I'm saying. Let Ford go hire Deon see what Groce can do with these freshmen coming in and not see the Martin experiment. If can get better than Martin go all in but if it's Martin say here is your only chance. One year your big class but get rid of Ford hire Deon.

No offense, but this is a really bad idea.

Has anyone thought about Jerrance Howard? Unless JW can hire the Lovie Smith equivalent of a bball coach, I don't think it's crazy to at least put him in the consideration set.

And this is worse.

I still ride for Eric Musselman btw.

The trick with him will be getting Dave Rice to come along, who is a big time recruiter but would definitely be a candidate to stick around as the head guy at Nevada.

And I am increasingly intrigued by Dan Muller.

I wouldn't want McDermott. I remember his time at ISU and he would be more of a risky hire at this point. I'm not sure his recruiting is up to snuff. He found and got lucky with some transfers. Their other transfer, Marcus Foster, was at K State. He was a problem child apparently and Weber had enough of him. He has resurrected his career it looks like.

How would Gregg Marshall be a bad fit for Illinois? I think he would battle the same struggles with recruiting Chicago but he has found ways to develop players like Van Fleet, Ron Baker, CleAnthony Early into NBA caliber players. He has done more with less than any other coach I've seen. He would be a home run hire. He is a better version of Fran McCaffery.

I still want Keatts. What that man has done at UNC-Wilmington screams future star to me.

To be fair, we thought the same thing about John Groce. I think getting a more established coach would be the preferred direction.

To be fair, I never bought into Groce when he got here. Plus, he didn't turn around a dumpster fire. If anything, a look at Groce at Ohio shows a coach who actually underperformed what his predecessor did. He just got hot in the NCAA.

Musselman is my top dark horse candidate. He has the coaching chops and I'm sure could put together a heck of a staff.

I think Groce was more a product of one good tourney run. Keatts has UNCW dominating their conference, which most agree is a better predictor of future success.

First, Fran McCaffery missed the NCAA 3 straight season, actually four if you count losing in the play-in game as well. Not a fan, and would be a terrible fit at Illinois.

Marshall IMO would struggle recruiting at Illinois. It is a lot different having success at mid-major and a lot different at Illinois. Unless a coach can reel in major talent, I do not believe he can win consistently at Illinois and our history proves that (e.g., 80s and early 2000s).

Marshall could do well at a high-major big "name" school where he could get the additional benefit of the "brand" in his recruiting efforts. He has elevated his status to the point that he can wait for such opportunity, rather take a major risk at a school of Illinois' status right now. There is absolutely no need to take such risk, so it is not happening.

Martin is not the Homecoming King by any means but at the same time, we as fans should temper our expectations. We need to realize that we're not getting the elite coaches to come to our school. So, what's the next best thing? A disciple of Gene Keady with B10 and Midwestern roots, a minority coach, who has developed multiple players who are now in the NBA. He will be able to reach out to the inner city of Chicago, the Metro East area as another poster mentioned, and his recruiting is starting to catch up to his coaching. His teams are defensive-minded and have an identity. These are all pros compared to what we have at the current moment.

I don't get the love for Martin. I mean I get it...but I don't. What's he really done and is his ceiling really that high?

He's made the tournament and been competitive at his two high-major stops, both things we're not sniffing right now.

And I think I've said this before, but I think his ceiling is probably the highest with either us or Purdue.
