My bad on Barnes forgot they played Melo

I am considering the whole, I don't think you are. Self won 4 Conference titles and a 2nd place finish prior to Kansas. 2 elite 8 appearances and a Sweet 16.

Bennett has 2 conference titles and a second place finish. 2 Sweet 16 and Elite 8.

Yes Bennett did most of the damage in the ACC but Self was in Big 10.

Calipari? It's not close and conference affiliation doesn't really matter when you have 3 Elite 8 appearance and 2 Final 4's including championship game. I don't know how many #1 seeds he had. At least 3 prior to UK

According to NCAA records, does the squid have any?

In some ways I think the reason we need a coaching change isn't just the bad listless basketball but for anyone that's gone to a game in person the atmosphere is completely dead its like going to a funeral for someone that didn't have any friends

First of al, this reply is not directed to you personally, but to people in general.

I am not arguing that John Groce is as good of a coach as Thad Matta or John Beilein or Matt Painter. My only point is even good coaches struggle when they don't have the requisite talent to succeed.

That was the only point of my post. I am not defending Groce, merely pointing out that there has to be talented players on a team for a team to be good in the BIG. We haven't had enough talented players, not have we had a PG until now, Tejon Lucas, who is a Freshman who spent the summer recovering from a broken ankle.

Let's see if Groce learns that along with Tate and Thorne, Tracy is a detriment to the team, and needs to play in a back-up role. If anyone of the above three are playing north of 15 minutes/game, you're not gonna beat any good teams which is what makes up most of the remainder of our schedule. And I am a huge Tracy fan. He's tough, but he's a shadow of himself out there b/c of his injuries.

I'm willing to see how this plays out. And I will be impressed if Groce leads this team to the NCAA tourney because I believe that though there are nice pieces on this team, there are too many veteran guys who can't play effectively at this level right now.

Others may disagree, but I'll be impressed with Groce if he leads this team to the NCAA tourney, and I think he should coach us next season if that happens. If he doesn't make the tourney, but makes the NIT, I have confidence that AD Josh Whitman will make the right decision, and if we whiff on all post-season play, then obviously JW should replace Groce.

I'll let the usual bickering and dream coaching hire scenarios resume now...

Interesting take, though who's job is it to acquire the talent needed to win?

No NCAA will be the 4th consecutive year that ILL has been shutout from the post-season discussion that used to routinely happen year in and year out. Completely unacceptable.

If you still try and do mental gymnastics to talk yourself into another year of Groce, chew on this...31-47 in B1G play over FIVE YEARS. I would argue that even a NCAA bid this year as a low seed warrants a dismissal. This isn't Illinois basketball and what I grew up with during the Henson, Kruger, and Self years. This is total garbage and needs to change.

Can't believe some of you are still pining for this staff to stay. It's not even a discussion at this point. The guy is gone and deservedly so. It's been his ship to steer and after 5 years the program has sunk like the Titanic.

I think I'm more bothered by the amount of posting without any actual attention to having any supporting facts, evidence, or statistics.

On that note, I think it is worth discussing that Kevin Keatts currently has the #25 offense on KenPom, and is #43 overall at UNCW. That's pretty impressive. He continues to intrigue me more and more every day. Here's where our current top names stand on KenPom:

Coach - School | Overall | Adj O | Adj D | Tempo |
=========================================
John Groce - Illinois | 73 | 68 | 92 | 252 |
Kevin Keatts - UNCW | 43 | 25 | 112 | 79 |
Musselman - Nevada | 70 | 46 | 142 | 101 |
Cuonzo Martin - Cal | 52 | 166 | 9 | 304 |
Archie Miller - Dayton | 34 | 120 | 8 | 233 |
Greg Marshall - Wichita | 26 | 26 | 55 | 148 |
Buzz Williams - VTech | 50 | 60 | 65 | 72 |
Tony Bennett - UVA | 5 | 15 | 6 | 351 |
Ben Jacobson - UNI | 159 | 269 | 73 | 318 |
Mick Cronin - UC | 20 | 55 | 3 | 311 |
Tim Jankovich - SMU | 23 | 30 | 38 | 342 |
Matt McCall - 'Nooga | 59 | 61 | 74 | 296 |
Will Wade - VCU | 57 | 91 | 48 | 109 |
Chris Mack - Xavier | 25 | 34 | 33 | 153 |
Steve Forbes - ETSU | 65 | 152 | 36 | 61 |
Holtmann - Butler | 15 | 14 | 44 | 288 |
McDermott - Creighton | 16 | 7 | 50 | 98 |

I don't believe I'm missing anyone here? It's a little surprising how poor Cuonzo's offense has been with the talent there right now, and for a tempo that low, it's not very efficient to compensate.

Will try to update this every few weeks just as an active snapshot. I found it interesting looking at this.

Side note, apologies for any readability issues with the table

Based on what I've read on this thread and on my google machine, I'm most intrigued by Kevin Keatts.

I dont understand the love for Cuonzo Martin. At all. He has been nothing but subpar with pretty talented teams.

Love this. Wouldn't mind seeing this adjusted out a few more years to get some scope.

If we're interested in coaches that don't have a lot of experience behind them (Keatts) - does anyone have a thought on Matt McCall in Chattanooga?

I saw this name on another site and I'm just seeing what others think. Like the other names, this does little for me as well.
