I'm really intrigued by Krystkowiak. His results at Utah, a P5 school, have to put him near or at the top. I just want to know where the whole idea is coming from that he's too Utahn or Montanan to want to leave, or wouldn't be able to figure out Midwestern recruiting if he does. I'm sincerely curious. Does anyone know if he's turned down other HC gigs recently? Does he <heart> Big Sky like Larry Bird does Indiana? Is he Mormon? I mean, he did spend 7 years in Milwaukee with the Bucks (2 as a coach) so he has to know something about our area.
Agreed. I believe there is a rationale there, but I would love to know what the evidence is that he is locked in out west.
Oversees underseed, at least they were seeded just sayin
Even a blind Josh Pastner finds a decent seed every now and again.

I hope Frazier stays and remember the tweet about committing to the school, but wasn't there another about "don't get rid of my guy Groce" or something like that? I am searching through this thread, but it might have been on another site.

it was along the lines of "don't get rid of my guy Groce. He needs to be there when I get there." It doesn't wholly indicate that it's Groce or bust however. It moreso reads as a preference. He also was openly smitten about a cheerleader at the university as well.

I'm 99.9% certain it won't happen, but just as an intellectual exercise: say we go on a hot streak--no major coaching adjustments, just the team gels and starts torching nets--finish the B1G season 7-1 (10-8), win 1 game in the BTT, and then lose in the first round of the NCAAT as an 8 seed...but we get commitments from Mark Smith and a solid 5th year big man. Groce is retained. How do you feel about the future of the program? Are you past the point of no return at this point - i.e. done with this staff barring a miracle Elite 8 run or something similar? Personally, I think I'd have mixed feelings.

Groce - Above average recruiter. Well below average x&o coach. The only way I could consider is if he bring in a great bench coach to truly develop these kids.

I have a feeling all of these kids are going to be more excited about playing for the new basketball coach than they are about playing for Groce. Kind of like how the football kids were more excited about playing for Lovie than Cubit. I really hope Mark Smith waits to see who the new coach is before making a decision!

What happened to this statement then?

Just want to be sure that you did not work for HP's What-if PR dept.

But, coming back to your scenario, what in that picture is diff? Only the kids who will no longer be here have gelled.

What gives me confidence is that Grove will no longer have a say in matters like "substitution". Heck about 50% of his team would be better then this year.

My concern: Groce will revert to playing kids who do well in practice. What if a Mark Smith does *not* do well in practice? Tell me if you will sit him on the bench for 80% of the season and I will then have an answer for you.

Absolutely keep Groce at that point. I think if we get to 9-9 and Smith says he wants to play for Groce I think you keep him, bottom line we need playmakers and I think they are coming. I don't think Frazier comes from Florida to play for a new coach. I am not sold on Martin but I do think him at Mizzou is not ideal

Recruit thread. He's saying when Groce is fired, Trent Frazier will go elsewhere. Oh well! I'd prefer he stay, but getting rid of Coach Ladder is better for the health of the program.

This would be by far his best class, if Smith was willing to commit but hesitating because he doesn't know who the coach will be I would keep Groce to get this class. I know I'm in the minority but talent wins games and Smith is a real wild card. I don't know what it would take to get him here but if telling him we are keeping Groce would do it then I would.

Nobody is saying Smith would commit to Illinois if Groce is kept. Even THEN, though, NO! Have you not seen enough of this garbage program? Really?

But Groce is still coaching them. He has a healthy, veteran team that has learned his system and look at the results. We are going to take away Hill, Morgan, Thorne, Abrams, and Tate. At this point, we will have zero seniors next year. We are going to add two top 100 freshman with one of those coming off of an ACL injury. Tilmon, as evidenced by tonight, has issues with foul trouble. Also ask yourself how many true freshman are physically ready to play D1 basketball? Additionally, you're severely overestimating the talent and impact of this class. If this was on par with a Duke or UK team where there are multiple MCDAA type players, then there might be an argument. This class is far from that.

Hell, it took until nearly the midway mark of the B1G slate before Te'Jon got significant minutes in the rotation. Despite their talent, do we trust Groce to even play the freshmen enough to make an impact? My guess is that Tilmon might play some out of necessity because Illinois wont be deep at bigs... but other than that we might not see some of these guys play much until Illinois is out of contention for the tournament again. At that point, do we give Groce another pass because he didn't play the freshmen enough?

Where does this madness end?

Some of you are confused or something. Most say should be competing for B1G championships but want to bring in a guy who doesn't know what conference championships are and is a mediocre coach because he is a Midwest guy. He has showed nothing that says he could come in and compete for the top of the B1G. Just because Martin was from the Midwest doesn't mean he will actually turn into an above average coach.

I foresee two possible outcomes if Capel becomes our next head coach:

1. He does well for a couple years, maybe we even get a S16 or E8 app out of it. Regardless, if he has any tourney success here, hes gone once K retires.

2. He does exactly what hes been doing as a HC and under perform. Oklahoma was awful, sans Griffin. He has done pretty poor this year, though I dont hold it too much against him.

The latter is about 100x more likely than the former. Not even to mention I highly doubt he leaves Duke, K is gone very soon and him staying compared to leaving for the UI job increases his likelihood of getting the best HC job in college immensely.

I'm OK with the Musselman talk. Sadly I really want to see a 3rd season out of him at Nevada first.

As for 1. that's Chris Collins' job to lose and based on what I've seen so far, I'd take Collins.

As for 2. I do hold that against him. How do you lose at home to NC State? Sheesh. Even Groce did better than that. Thanks but no thanks. (By the way, what do you think of Cincinnati's hire of Luke Fickell?)

Yes, 2. is more likely and why would Duke make him head coach over Collins (who would clearly take the job if offered)?

Yes, you're in the minority and talent in a P5 program w/o good coaching ain't worth a bucket of warm spit (... and that's why you're in the minority).

Most people here want every recruit for the 2017 class to stay but if given the choice between keeping Groce and all of the recruits or losing every recruit and getting their #1 choice for HC would go with the latter.

Keatts MW/Chicago Ties?

Have tried hard to keep up with this thread but don't remember anyone addressing this. Many posters have cited the above as "one of the boxes to be checked" in a coaching search. Seems to me that Keatts' resume shows nothing to suggest he has ties to the State, the City, or the Metro (vs. say Archie or Cuonzo). Unless Lousville is considered "Midwest." (I know it's just across the river from Indiana).

His background does seem impressive but this is keeping me from jumping onto his Train. Plus the No P5 wins.

That part is SO overrated! Did Bill Self have those ties when we hired him? NO! Did Weber and Groce? Yes! Look where that got us!
