At this point, even if we win the BTT and get in the NCAAT, I still want a new coach. This afternoon reminded me of why I started to not like Groce from the beginning.

Yep. I enjoyed bracketology for a couple of days. I'd guess Keatts and Monty are at the top of the list right now?

If we fire Groce after BTT loss, do we accept an NIT bid?

I would say no unless either a) the seniors want to play in the NIT really badly or b) we don't have a new coach lined up yet (or he'll be coaching in the NCAAs) so might as well buy some more time before firing Groce.

For trying to hold onto our incoming recruits, would prefer to leave as little time as possible between Groce's firing and the next coach's hiring.

2013: Groce and Illinois get screwed on an out of bounds call, paving the way for replay to come to college basketball

2017: Instant replay overturns a play and costs Groce his job

lol

We always accept the bid for the NIT, always. Groce will know his fate but the public wont be notified until its done. They I expect a swift move by Whitman like he did for Football. No hemming or Hawing.

Well, we're going to find out if making the tourney was a line in the sand, or if it was fake news.

Find the money, hire monty. Keep walker on staff. Bring in Deon, or Rev to coach the bigs. Get a former head coach for the other assistant spot. Hit the ground running

That's critically important. Need to hire someone with name recognition so JW and the new coach can pitch sticking around to recruits. I think Da'Monte and Pickett are relatively safe, Tilmon and Frazier will be highly sought after.

Still 100% Team Keatts here.

I would take Keatts over Groce next year, but he'd be such a gamble. Best case, he might turn into the next Bill Self... worst case, we might have five more years of this mess.

I really hope Whitman can work some magic here and hire an established coach with a demonstrated record of CONSISTENT winning. I keep seeing these coaches (Brad Underwood, Jamie Dixon) who roll in and immediately make an impact turning a program around. A different coach could right the ship at Illinois.

I would take almost any coach being discussed over Groce next season, regardless of what happens with the recruits. There HAS to be a light at the end of the tunnel here, and I'm not seeing it with Groce.

Dream scenario for me: Monty Williams with Anthony Grant as AHC and Randy Ayers. Walker retained. Grant takes a head job after 1-3 years and Ryan Ayers is brought in as his replacement. Randy Ayers retires after 3-4 years and another dynamic recruiter is hired to take his place.

I'm sure it won't happen that way, but it's the ideal plausible outcome I can muster.

Groce just left, and turned out the light.

I'm all for Keatts or Monty. No on Cuonzo. Make this happen JW!

I'd still take cuonzo, but only if a bunch of other people say no. He may or may not be an upgrade in coaching, but at least we'd get players. That being said, I hope it doesn't come to that

Just going to the whole discussion of sample sizes and avoiding recency bias- the objection to cuonzo shouldn't just be that he's crapping out this year. It should be that he's made tourney 2 of 8 seasons before this and got eliminated in first round one of those two times. (Edited for typo)

He reached the S16 with Tennessee.

I definitely don't disagree. However, with the exception of this year, it does seem his teams improve each year. Much rather have Monty though with Walker to keep our 2017 class together
