Just heard Brad Evans on the Tay and Jay podcast discussing Ben Howland as a realistic option. I know he is older, but maybe he could help get the program back to a stable place before retirement. Not to mention, MS State is not a destination spot...

I think Howland is a good coach, but he had some issues at UCLA that bordered on player abuse, and that would probably be a deal-breaker for Illinois, given our recent history. Sports Illustrated did a story on this at the time:

I will root for the Illini to win in the BIG tournament and get in the NCAA tournament. Whitman will make the right decision and if Groce stays I think he can win and I will root for him to succeed, if he is let go I hope the new coach is the greatest coach we have ever had.

Crean in play for Illinois?

If you look at it objectively he is the best "gettable" Power 5 coach.

But, didn't he hold a press conference stating he is not interested in the University of Illinois? Hmm, must of been someone else. :noidea::D

I'd take this over anything else in the field. My guess is that Whitman will support JG all the way to the end, which btw, is part of what makes him a great AD. He wants JG to succeed. He would much rather have JG succeed than the alternative. He will "come to a mutual agreement" if possible, and something else if necessary. Just guesses, admittedly. He will also move very quickly once set in motion, and hopefully he's put himself in a good position to execute. Like any good surgery, once you make the cut, the clock is ticking. I say this as someone who rarely goes into surgery without a plan.

Agree. Surgery always works out best if there is a plan in place before you start. This was one of my criteria when I sought out a surgeon for carpal tunnel endoscopy, my primary concern being the ability to continue to post my words of wisdom on this site after surgery. The operations were successful. The rest is history.

That particular troll was so much more effective in the days before YouTube included ads before everything, but well done.

Honest question - where is all the Walker love coming from? The manner Walker is discussed here it sounds like he's our best assistant. Is that true? I'm in no position to argue one way or the other so just asking.

I get the impression that Ford is Groce's mini-me sidekick, and I assumed top assistant. Walker has had some St Louis connections that worked in our favor, and Parham has the Chicago connection that worked in our favor initially with Nunn, but now???

Personally, I think the assistants as a whole are garbage but I really have no insight into is it just one guy that's terrible, are they all terrible?

Would it be smart to keep any of them?

Not sure how much Parham had to do with landing Nunn. He wasn't added to the staff until July, after Isaac Chew ditched us to go to Marquette. He was also supposed to be really tight with Bates-Diop and we didn't land him.

The only reason Walker is mentioned as someone to keep is to hang on to Tilmon and possibly stay in good graces with Liddell and the other StL area kids.

Would much rather have Walker than others, especially if Martin ends up at Mizzou, I could see him trying to poach Walker as Top Asst. especially to help him with St.Louis ties. He might need them long term, but Walker is in on many in the short term?

ALOT of underlying tones to this article...

http://www.news-gazette.com/news/local/2017-03-07/groce-my-focus-one-day-time.html

For any persons that haven't abandoned ship yet...it is sinking quickly. Whitman has declined all interviews until after the season, Groce is taking things day to day, "they" haven't really talked much about it (so once they did and the narrative was...hey last chance buddy) so no further talks needed? Just saying this looks like a lot of smoke, and where that is, there is a FIRE!!!

To me, it looks like a whole lot of nothing.

No new info there and certainly no smoke. Whitman is behaving like a good AD should - i.e., the exact opposite of how Mike Thomas behaved.

I've seen Groce bristle at any reference to his job security during the pressers. Article makes it seem like he and Whitman are on the same page about avoiding the subject.

Contrast the comments in this article vs those during Weber's demise; night and day. I respect Groce keeping his composure. Too bad that when it comes to the basketball aspects like inbounding the ball, and managing the roster it's been amateur hour.

Dear Leader, let's play a mind game. Pretend Kansas, Duke, North Carolina, or Kentucky have the record the Illini do in recent years. A coach that can't coach. A coach that's a questionable recruiter. A coach with a bad won-lost record. But he's a great guy you'd like to hang with and have a cold one. Do Kansas, Duke, North Carolina, or Kentucky keep him? And do their fans just smile and say, "Well, that's OK with me!" If you think that our current coach is the best we can get then by all means keep him. But if that is in fact the case, then we have much bigger problems than who is yelling from the sidelines next season.

That is SOP.

On heels of Huskers' worst home loss in program history, Tim Miles focused on improving, not job status

Miles is headed for a fourth losing season in five years, and the program just finished without a winning record in conference play for the 17th time in 18 years. “I’m not worried about my job,” Miles said. “My administrators have supported me the whole time, and have been there to support us whether at a game or practice.”
