First let me say I am not in favor of keeping John Groce as coach. However, in my opinion, if the Illini come out and beat Michigan, they have a 50/50 chance of making the NCAA tournament and Groce has a 50/50 chance of keeping his job.

The Best Option is to keep Groce and the incoming Recruiting class intact for next year.

You can Flame me all you want for that thought but it is the best option.

No. It's not. Not even close. Nothing about the last 5 years would suggest that to anyone who's been watching.

No it's not! You couldn't be more incorrect!

but I keep reading posts that there are no available coaches out there that "wow" them or "excite" them.

Why does anybody need to be wowed??

If the coach WINS, that is all I need. I don't care if he is a great X's and O's coach, or a great recruiter, or what mix of talents he has. JUST WIN!

Big name, mid-major, assistant coach........none of those things matter if the next Coach WINS.

You either trust Whitman to find the right guy....or you don't. After the last 10 years of Weber and Groce, I can't believe the arguments on here. Find a good basketball coach that WINS!

Because if you take a coach that can't "wow", you're just a gambler. You don't know what he can do, you don't know if he can keep recruits.

If you aren't getting a wow coach, keep Groce. Sign me next to the other guy asking to be flamed.

I just can't believe people still have this attitude (or even just want to keep JG outright). The guy has never finished higher than 7th in our conference in 5 years. That is unacceptable...especially for an athletic director whose own slogan is #wewillwin.

I'd rather have to find a new guy every 3-4 years than accept a coach who will keep us mired in mediocrity. It's been 5 years. We know what we have in Groce. It's time to move on, gamble or not, because I want to at least have hope that #wewillwin in the near future.

This is the equivalent of saying that ketchup is the best option on your hot dog.

Do athletic directors usually travel to these tournaments this early with the team. Whitman just posted a pic on his twitter of him in the plane leaving for DC? Wonder if he'll be on the west coast with the bball team all day or making deals.

You spelled "I've given up and accepted mediocrity" wrong.

I'm leaning that way myself. IF you replace Groce, you better have a "Holy (expletive omitted)" hire locked up. Otherwise, you're stuck in rebuilding mode again for an indefinite number of years.

Agree with this option. Lou Henson didn't have a great record in his first 5 years but he did very well after that.

If we got the number one draft pick for tanking, you might be onto something. The definition of insanity is doing something over and over again and expecting a different result. What has Groce done to warrant him keeping his job?

Is it his number of 20 point losses which nearly double Self, Weber, and Kruger combined? Is it his inability to not beat Wisconsin a single time in his career here? Is it his ability to not finish higher than 7th a single time in the conference? Is it his 37-53 (.411) conference record? Is it his closing ability in must win games against inferior opponents (Rutgers, Penn State, etc.)? Is it his ability to adapt as Lucas didn't start until game 20 this year?

All of these recruits will come if Walker stays on staff. Recall that Tilmon said verbatim that he would not have come here had it not been for Jamal Walker, not John Groce. Those other guys will come no matter who is coaching here.

This is so warped. The thing that leaves you "stuck" is staying the course with the guy who has proven he cannot get it done.

Times are changing, my friend. I mean, our president eats his steak with ketchup. Surely, hot dogs are next.

Right now there is not a coach available that wows me. Is Bennie Lewis or Landon "Sonny" Cox still around. How Sergio McClain, what happen to Kenny Battle. Steve Bardo or Kendall Gill interested.

You have exceptionally weird and narrow criteria for being wowed.

I agree with you. Im sick of the yo-yo of changing out coaches for more mediocre coaches. Whitman Better get our guy this time, or just wait. I trust him to make the right call. If he sticks with Groce, I will trust he made the right call. (That said, Whitman is savvy. i don't think Groce will not be our coach next year. Whitman's got it figured out).

How do you know you can't get a better coach if you don't try?
