If Josh Whitman really, genuinely believes this, then he should sign Groce to a contract extension, get out in front of a microphone and make that case firmly and steadfastly. Forget what us meatball fans say.

As a meatball fan, I find the quoted statement utterly farcical. But I'm not at practice every day.

Even if you were at practice, we would have no idea how good the freshman actually are, and I'm assuming the original poster is counting heavily on them.

Well whatever. Whitman has genuine on-the-ground knowledge about the inner workings of Groce's program that outsiders do not have.

If he is convinced that Groce is the guy, he should march through the firestorm that retaining him would bring without a second thought.

Prior to the Groce era, the Illini had only missed the NCAA Tournament in back-to-back years once since the early 80s ('91 / '92). We've now missed the tourney 4 straight years. It is utterly unacceptable.

And in '91 we were 3rd place in B10 and would've made the tourney except for sanctions.

Can we all just agree not to respond directly to this and stop pretending that it is an argument that needs debated? Please. Everyone knows it's absurd. Let's not fall back into this circular debate. It's a trap folks.

To the posters commenting that the recruiting class is reason to keep Groce...

I think it's actually a strong selling point to the new coach and makes THIS year ideal to move on.

If I were the incoming coach I'd rather convince a half-dozen recruits that have already committed than worry about gracefully dumping a class of Orrises over the next 1-2 years.

Great point. The current recruiting class should help us attract a coach.

Not trying to trap anyone, just don't want to see us sitting here 2 years from now in a Bradley like situation.

I want discussions off of the bubble and focused on where rounds 1 and 2 will be played.

I'm all for a new coach. All I want is what JW promised when he took the job, "We will win." Not in 2-3 years, next year. That's it, nothing more, nothing less.

I won't cry if we lost this year's recruits by firing Groce, if it's going to better the program in the long run. I was for a long time, sold on keeping Groce for the 2017 class. Not anymore.

You realize that every season we delay the firing of Groce pushes this time out at least one additional year, right? This statement is precisely why many of us cannot understand how anyone can be defending the retention of Groce. The data indicates that Groce cannot get Illinois to that point. Not next year. Not in 2 years. Not ever.

Of course, Orris is going to be playing in the NCAA tourney this year, so things worked out pretty well for him.

Gregg Marshall. 4.85 mil for 6 years. Make it happen.

Really don't want Greggggg. He has the reputation for being a huge butthole, and I suspect that he might be one of those coaches whose best fit is at a mid-major/low P5 program where he can work his system with three and four year players and not have to deal with higher expectations and top 10 (or even top 40) level recruiting efforts.

I wanted Buzz Williams last time around, and would still be pleased to get him. At this point, I'd be pleased with just about anyone but Gregggg, honestly.

Hard to argue. My fear about Marshall for some time has been "fit". I just want to get a winner in here. These last 10 years have been brutal. Wow. 10 years!

Nice! Retain Walker and Tilmon stays. Get a good coach and Smith joins. One of the main concerns people had with firing Groce was the class. And that could be a non-issue.

Ritster,

You must be a youngster who doesn't remember the good old days. Laying a 112 points on UCLA in basketball, upsetting the #1 team in football 3 consecutive homecomings, including Wisc on the last play of the game. Bring back Doug Mills.

Unfortunately that was so long ago I'm starting to forget.

People, there really was a time when we kicked !!!

But I get it. I think those are legitimate concerns or questions, but ultimately his track record indicates he is one of the elite basketball coaches in the world. I think he'd get it figured out one way or another. I just can't imagine anyone not being thrilled with Gregg Marshall taking over for John Groce. It blows my mind.

That is some really great news to read- I could not access the podcast so I cannot confirm by listening.

Can't wait to see this kid play for :illinois:

I did not know that. In hind sight it was poor taste to call him out like that, but the reference was to it being clear he was not in Groce's future plans when he took the job.

If the choice was Gregggg or Groce, sure, I'd take Gregggg. I just don't view him as the be-all, end-all, Very Best Option On The Market like so many people seem to.

I get why some coaches are always on the move, striking while the iron is hot and never staying anywhere long enough for a regression to the mean to allow the natives to get restless, but at the same time, I think a lot of coaches do themselves a disservice by "moving up" when they have a good thing going.

If Weber had stayed at SIU, I bet he would have continued to have the same level of success there that he had when we hired him, and SIU would be a threat for the S16 every year. Same goes for Shaka Smart staying at VCU. There are plenty of other examples. Dan Monson left Gonzaga for greener pastures, now where is he? On the contrary, Mark Few has had plenty of opportunities to leave, and yet he's content to stay put and thrive where he knows he has a good thing going. And I suspect that Greggg may also subscribe to the "dance with the date who brought you" philosophy. At least I hope he does for our sake...

Anyway, that's kind of a roundabout way of saying that I just don't get the feeling that Greggg is going to equal or exceed his level of success anywhere else. Hell, I'll go so far as to say that I would be pleased for him to end up at Indiana, where he would delight all the stupid, banner-licking old fools who still pine for a Bobby Knight-esque disciplinarian, and where I think he would struggle to adapt to a different set of expectations than anything like he's ever faced.

Definitely a loyal basketball recruit. Thanks, Trent, looking forward to seeing you in O&B next year!

Honestly, we could use a little bit of arrogance back in our program. Marshall would bring that in spades. Miller vs. Marshall, I like Miller a bit more. Just like the cut of his jib, but Marshall would undeniably be a fantastic hire.
