Pieters was on a tear for a while there. Let's hope he can turn it back around tomorrow. It would be awesome to see him in contention on Sat./Sun.

Hoffman got it to 8 under to start his day, but is now at 4 under to finish his round. Just goes to show that the golf course giveth, and the golf course taketh away.

Pieters is playing well. Missed that birdie putt by inches that would have given him sole possession of the lead.

Pieters and Fowler playing together in the second to last pairing today. Should be a really fun pair to watch.

Zurich Classic is using a 2 man team format this year, will be interesting to see how it plays out. They will use both foursome (alternate shot) and fourball (better ball) formats, alternating each round. Usually we see those formats during Ryder/Presidents Cup play, but the difference is those events are match play and this one is stroke play. Another interesting aspect is both members of the winning team get credit for a tour win, so 2 year exemption, etc. No Masters invite, though.

Illini in the field (with partner):

Stricker (Jerry Kelly)
Pieters (Daniel Berger)
Campbell (Miguel Angel Carballo)

Tough day for Campbell, was tied for the lead early on in the round and ended up missing the cut.

Langley and Guthrie both doing well in the web.com event in the Dominican Republic.

Look at Points finishing with a top 20 showing. Very nice!

Yeah I was looking for Brian Campbell on the leaderboard late Friday night. Bad round, but hopefully a learning experience for him. Good to see D.A. finish strong. Also a decent finish by Guthrie and Langley in the web.com this weekend.

So DA Points and Steve Stricker are in the field at the Players this week, Thomas Pieters is not. He's eligible since he's in the top 50 in the world rankings, but isn't playing. As far as I can tell, it's his choice not to play which is too bad.

Side note, saw that Charlie Danielson advanced from his local US Open qualifier so he'll be playing in the sectionals in a few weeks. Some other former/current/future Illini didn't make it - Feagles, Baumgarten, Chopra, Hauter, O'Reilly, Kuhl.

I'm assuming guys like Guthrie, Langley and Detry will be in the sectionals? Anyone else?

I understand why they might consider those changes, but I'm not sure people care enough about the FedEx race to begin with. Getting it done before football starts sounds like a good idea on the surface but not sure it's going to drastically increase interest. And screwing around with the majors is not a good idea, IMO.

Frank Nobilo signed off tonight from "Live From The US Open" by saying that our Thomas Pieters was his favorite to win it outside of Rory McIlroy.

Pieters also got a shout out from the former head of European golf as an up and coming favorite. Very cool and we shall see!!
