Having the Metrodome to play home games in for several years probably helped.
Yeah, and Minn won the NCAA Golf Championship in what, 2002, 2003? Last BIG team do do it. Northern teams can do well in baseball and golf.

One more thing as I sit here hoping for an Illini rally:

My favorite pitcher in MLB in recent memory was Greg Maddux if only for this reason: he was a great fielder; after throwing the pitch he'd square himself to the plate and usually block the middle.

Pitchers today are "throwing" with everything they've got; and they're falling off the mound. Result: you lose a defender.

It's too bad the pitchers had a melt-down that last game. Illinois' draw in the BTT would have been much better as the #3 seed. I would much rather face Iowa than Indiana in the first round. Also, I hope that loss doesn't end up costing them an NCAA bid.

Strikeouts have been at historical highs and batting.averages at historical lows. Good fielding pitchers are like good hitting pitchers. Nice to have but not a huge impact. See Jon Lester who is league worse in both. Has been the ace for 3 WS champs.

I respectfully disagree somewhat. I'd rather have a good-fielding pitcher than a good-hitting pitcher.

Maddux won 18 gold gloves! Saved some runs from being scored, I think.

If you don't have a good-fielding pitcher, you've got to rely on a quality Keystone Combo! (I love those old-time expressions that I grew up with, along with "battery.")

My dream Keystone Combo is Sandberg-Banks. Yes, Ernie! What power! And he was regarded as a great shortstop; won a gold glove while lining them on to Waveland Ave.

I realize we're not all Cubs' fans here, but wasn't Fergie a pretty good hitter? Gibson?

Hello:

Don't quite know how to take your comment.

But I will add that baseball players today don't know how to wear their pants.

The proper way is mid-, upper- calf--lengh pants with stirrups and sanitary hose. Not just below the kneecap.

And you just don't, where I come from, wear your pants down to the ankles and beyond. I would have felt so uncomfortable. Conscriptive. Again, .that's just me.

In a perfect world, I would pay for my ideas of great unis and standards. Fat chance. .

Beat Indiana and that should be enough for a NCAA bid. They must win at least one game in the BTT.

In Omaha right now, looking out from my 18th floor hotel room, at the softly lit Ameritrade Park. Looking forward to tomorrow night.

I stayed up and watched the game. Good to see them win with Spillane having an off game.

Impressed with the Illini's defense. They made a number of great plays in the field, and they capitalized on Indiana's mistakes.

Tough game against Minny tonight, as the Gophers were able to win with their spot starter last night, so they have their two aces still available. Could be another late night.

The Gophers got away with one yesterday - the guy was out at third. Don't know what bearing it had on the game.

Pinstripes are beeutiful!

Illini may be on a roll.

I'll be watching tonight.

Remember: Indiana was in the top 20 not so long ago. ILL can take down another top 20.

The announcers were talking that if Indiana could win the conf tourney, that they may be in line for hosting a pod of 4 as a top 16 team. For a top hitting team like they were, we held them to 2 hits. We may face them again this tourney, as I feel they will beat MSU today.

Is there somewhere I can to to understand how this double elimination tourney runs?

And yes, I'll be staying up late eastern time to see the Illini take out the Golden Rodents.

There is a book, "The Lazslo Letters", circa 1978, in which the author Lazslo Toth (aka Don Novello (sp?) aka Fr. Guido Sarducchi (sp?) sends out letters to prominent world leaders and celebrities hoping they'll respond. Most do,and the results are hilararious.

I shot Coach Hartleb an email wishing him and his team well tonight against Minn. I said he didn't have to reply - get some rest and get ready. Mentioned beautiful unis. Illini beat a former top-20 team and could do it again.

Two minutes later he responded : "Thank you, Tom."

It just shows to go you: you send an email, you might get one back from a prominent Illini coach. So far I've contacted Small, Sloan, Hartleb and Jenny (golf director) with SINCERE (no hilarity) well wishes.

I think Lovie and Brad are off-limits. Twitter, tweeter, facetube, whatever, only.

ILLINI.

Why only 8 teams in the Big 10 tournament? Were there play in games that weren't shown on the bracket?

Only 8 of the 13 teams qualify for the tournament. Big ten only has 13 teams as Wisconsin does not have a varsity team, only a club team. The top 8 teams in the standings at the end of the season qualify.
