Just looked it up and there was even an article about Jaylon being considered for Rookie of the Year. He had some impressive stats..

JG is a sneaky good player developer guy;)

Not sure where to put this but I'm curious if anyone knows the story behind #EveryDayGuys ?

I know it’s an underwood saying. He wants guys who will show up, work hard, compete to get better everyday. Typical coach stuff

If I’m not mistaken, isn’t this the year for the summer overseas trip? Would be very beneficial to our young team and to see what our new staff is able to get out of it.

Believe that is next year. This is year is Maui invitational.

1&2:TF, Ayo, DW, Feliz
3:Jones, AG AJ
4: Ebo, Kipper
5: Kane, Ben

Thats your 11 man rotation (kipper as 3 or 4).

Success will largely depend on 4 and 5 development.

I think DW will see plenty of time at the 2/3, taking minutes from one of the freshmen.

I can see this as an early rotation, but as Big Ten season rolls around, I agree with Obelix, the "rotation" will be reduced. Playing time will go to about 8 guys, with a few minutes here and there for others.
If we can combine the really good perimeter D we saw late in Season and resetting our 7 second Offense goals, I can see us making some progress. I hope Kane will be our new Egwu rim protector...that would help alot

Truth.

Kane's ability to play D, block shots and rebound is soooo much more important than offense, at least initially. His first year that's where the focus should be, plus building his body and athleticism. Hopefully, he's up to the task.

Reminds me (yes, I am old) that the Spurs told David Robinson his rookie year, play defense, rebound, when you get an offensive rebound , put it in.

It's good to be tall.

FROM hoops recruiting Red River....

thought that was interesting, so I looked at the top 40 teams in 3 pt. fgp, and saw that 19 of the top 40 made the NCAA tournament. The 40th team shot .384. The teams who made the tournament dropped off significantly after the top 40. I noticed that Knight and Pitino jumped on the 3 pt. shot as a significant factor for their teams, as soon as it became a rule. I have thought 40% is good, .375 is okay. Even though .375 equates to 56% 2 pt. as far as points scored, there are more long rebounds which often give up easy baskets to the opponent. If you want to speed up the opponent, and score in the first 10 seconds or so, to get open looks, it is a tool set that you must have to be successful. I think Underwood saw to many bricks last year, and is trying to improve that. http://www.espn.com/mens-colle...PointFieldGoalPct/seasontype/2

On winning team stats....Villanova was elite in APG, 3PA and 3P% per game. Just goes to show you that you can live by 3P and win.

Its also not just about volume of 3 point shots its about the quality of those shots too. Generally the teams with the best % are ones that get a lot of player and ball moving, lots of drive and dish to get the defense moving around. Just running up the court and chucking up a 3 is not going to be helpful.

absolutely! I looked at the espn top 40 various lists and it is amazing how the top teams in the country are avg 17 or more assists per game. If you combine that with elite 3p % (close to 40%) and great D, you have a winning recipe (see Villanova)

I love DaMonte and I am excited for his game to develop. I simply see T. jones as a better fit for our offense due to his outside shot. Now DaMonte does exactly what we need in the 3/4 press so can Jones play defense? I have no idea.
Many newcomers. Glad most will be here in June rather than August. AJ, Kip and TFs leadership through summer will likely determine how quickly we can put this train back on the track with this new team. We are largely starting over...but with some quality newcomers. I dread hearing in december that we have only installed 25% of our system.

Tyler and AJ will have installed in summer.

Villanova had FIVE guys attempt 3 or more 3pointers. Having multiple shooters along with ball movement is often deadly. One guy having a bad night does not sink you.

Having said that, Mighigan had SEVEN guys attempt 2 or more 3pointers but overall had a very off night. Nova had the 3rd best defense according to KenPom, so I think that's at least part of it in this case.

Do we know if all of the recruits plan on being on campus in June?

#670
Why? I still do not understand the persistence on this board of getting rid of Kipper.

General question, what are even the chances Kipper is eligible for a grad transfer? As I recall he left Tulane before completing any classes, so this should just be his actual 3rd year of college classes.

Maybe OA works his magic with Matic all summer and we see a mobile passing (5) non positionless big when the season starts? Or maybe he gets creaned if someone else reclass' and decides to join us?

Ya know. I have this strange affinity for matic and I can’t figure out why. In a much earlier post somewhere, I put that he didn’t have the skills. I’m not sure if that’s true or if the game was just moving way, way, way too fast for him to ever show what he can truly do (along with all the other major adjustments he was making last year). I just see his athleticism as a separating factor if it ever all comes together.

That said I’d trade him for Okoro without blinking.

I'm in "some sort" of agreement with you, but I don't know why, or to what end... Many on here were calling for Matic to redshirt this past season. They were probably right, but he couldn't because we only had 11 scholly players last season. Now, it seems that ALMOST everyone wants him to transfer or be creaned (creamed???). I don't get it...??? If he had redshirted this past season, would all of the "experts" on here want him to transfer/be creaned without seeing him play a single minute???

I don't know the answer to that question...but I, personally, wouldn't have wanted him run off without seeing him play meaningful minutes. Matic didn't play any meaningful minutes this year, because he should have been redshirted, but couldn't be redshirted (leaving us with 10 scholly players). I'm not sure what type of player he will or won't become, but he seems to have a skillset that can develop with time. I believe that our current roster allows him to do just that.

Of course, anyone would trade him for Okoro (regardless of signing class year).... They are different players with different skills. However, at the time of signing Matic, that trade wasn't on the board. One was a 2017 recruit and one was a 2019. Not sure how that trade could be conceived as possible at that time.

Instead of focusing on Matic, who else on the roster would "we (being the experts that we are)" trade for Okoro? We have a bunch of verbal commits that haven't signed. If Okoro says "ILL - INI", who do you "crean" before they have even had a chance to sign?

I don't know all of the answers, because I'm not an expert on here...just another way to look at/think about things...

Matic was offered and the staff accepted his commitment for a reason. He missed a ton by not getting here with the rest of the freshman last summer. Add in the cultural adjustment of going somewhere that doesn't speak your native language, adjusting to entirely new food, and starting college all at once, of course it's going to be a slow start.

If Matic stays, he's going to improve a lot this off-season. He'll contribute next year.

I took a sabbatical from the board the last month or so (I know, blasphemy). I have just now caught up on Illini Hoops Recruiting Thread (March 2018). Interesting to see all the predictions. A lot of people thought Black would not leave. And that Matic would definitely be gone (watch, five minutes after I post this, he will announce his transfer). A fairly much debated thread was the topic of whether the Illini will be better next year. And not just how the faithful see it, but what people (sports writers, Kenpom, etc.) outside the O & B fandom see how we will do next year. Well, your wish is my command. I ran across a way too early ranking of the BIG for next year. I know it is to be taken with a whole heaping of salt. The writer picks us 11th, interestingly, ahead of Ohio State but behind Northwestern which I think is wrong. We are better than Northwestern. But it seems as if this writer is paying attention. He states that it was looking as if Illinois was going to be at or near the bottom again but the pick-ups of Jones and Feliz makes us a more compelling team. Again, a long way to go. OSU will probably pick up some decent players, too, etc., etc., etc.
