Freshman Damonte > alstork

If you ignore defense and offense, then sure...

Alstork had a higher Offensive Rating, eFG%, FT%, FG%, and virtually identical 3P%, had a better !!!%.

Williams out rebounded Alstork. That's about it.

Obviously, i don't know how the competition in practices will go. but i would start Kane at center. I want that extra height and reach in the lane as much as possible.

Alstork was a 5th year senior, Williams true Freshmen recovering from a major injury who hadn't played competitive basketball in a year. Reasonable to expect significant improvement next year.

This is not a reach of an assumption. You also did not include Alstork's ridiculous knack for bone head fouls 60 feet from the basket.

Alstork was better defensively but I think Williams has the same defensive potential as a sophomore. All the other categories were pretty much the same. Williams actually had an ever so slightly higher FG%. Again, this is comparing a 5th year to a freshmen. Williams over Alstork is a no-brainer.

In terms of returning players who I'm excited about are Aaron Jordan and Da'Monte Williams. Jordan has that 'junkyard dog' mentality that I really like and Da'Monte has a high basketball IQ, possibly the best on the team.

In terms of the new guys coming in, I have this feeling that Samba Kane is gonna be a good one for us. It'll be interesting to see how his body physique changes and his impact on both ends of the floor. Also feel like Illini got a steal in Griffin. I like his swagger.

When you finish 12th in the B1G with 4-14 record, the discussion on whether we will be better next year is really irrelevant IMO. How much worse can we be?

The critical question is whether we will be good enough to at least make the tournament, let alone compete in the upper echelon of the B1G.

Not unless we get a magical 5th year big (Caroline, Baum, or someone of that quality). Or BU is pure magic.

He is athletic with potential. But keep in mind he is a raw, inexperienced big. We will be lucky if he can go 12 minutes without consistently fouling out.

Are all of the bigs going to be here in the summer? Should make a difference as Alstork, Matic, and Williams weren't able to practice last year.

I was responding to the assertion that Williams was better last year. Significant improvement is not relevant.

We're going to have to run him (Kane) out there for 12+. Not because he is ready, but we won't have a choice.

This is a 2018 thread. The topic is next years version of players vs this years actual players. I missed the post you responded to that changed the subject. Carry on.

Wish we waited just a few more years to do the Maui Invitational.

We could get slaughtered but we have absolutely nothing to lose. A win against almost any of those teams would be more valuable than half a dozen wins against cupcakes. There aren't good losses but the losses against good teams don't hurt your resume.

Kane, will be on the floor "half" the time. Kane will be more of a force on defense than Ebo.

That seems like an awful lot to expect from a freshman big. He is almost guaranteed to have foul problems. The refs seem to have an unspoken rule about never giving freshman the benefit of the doubt.

True. Winning the Maui Invitational was one of Groce's highest points during his Illinois coaching tenure. I know the teams that will be in it. Do we know who we will be playing first?

Whatever happened to Vesel leaving? Seems nothing official has happened.

Sounds like Matic could be staying. If Fletch can work his majic on Matic, he could be a good player. He already has a good skill set, he just needs strength and confidence.

I am not disagreeing but has anyone seen his good skill set (what is it) or was this just mentioned when we are recruiting. Hopefully, Fletch can perform some magic.

I know that we havent been nearly as good as Michigan State recently but I've always liked how they play a brutal non-con schedule. Always feels like they're ready to go and not fazed by B1G play when it comes around. Conversely, for Illinois it always feels like we are blindsided by the change in competition once B1G starts and that kinda snowballs from there.

Obviously it's a balance because we don't need out players to be blown out by 20 every game before conference play even starts but I'm fine with playing a much better non-con than we have recently (and I think Underwood said something to that effect before this season but I'm not 100% sure)

Master of the understatement...LOL, :chief:
