2020-21 Illini Men's Golf

All 30 teams and six individuals will complete 54 holes of stroke play. (Following 54 holes of competition, the top 15 teams along with the top nine individuals not on an advancing team will continue on for one additional day of stroke play to determine the eight teams for match play and the 72-hole individual champion. The top eight teams after 72 holes of play will be placed into a bracket with the number one seed playing the number eight seed, the number two seed versus the number seven seed, the number three seed versus the number six seed and the number four seed versus the number five seed competing in match play. Ties for the top eight will be broken by a sudden-death playoff or, if necessary, by the non-sudden-death tiebreaking procedure set forth in this manual.

June 1st starts match play, 2 rounds. Finals match is on June 2nd.
Awesome explanation!
Thanks

If you’re bored, the Albuquerque regional will be fun to keep track of today. #1 OU trying to earn a spot and a bunch of teams around the cut line.

Does anyone know the format for breaking ties? I thought it might be 5th man score but I don’t think that’s right. Do they all play the first playoff hole and count the best 4 of 5 scores?

According to this site, "A team tie-breaker will include a sudden-death playoff where all five scores are counted".

You can check out golfstat.com and see the top five from each region. Looks like a tough field, as always.
Can someone provide a list of the 30 qualifying teams?
Okla, Fla St, Clem, Okla St, Texas, Wake, Pepperdine, UNC, Ill, NC St, Ga, Az St, Vandy, Liberty. Fla, Tenn, SMU, TTU, Ark, San Fran, Ga Tech, SD St, L;ville, UAB, TCU, Oregon St, E Tenn St, San Diego, Little Rock. The top 13 qualified as 14 TAMU missed. I put in order of highest to lowest in rank.

Thank you. Not a lot of northern schools.

Don’t know much about Clemson but OU, OSU, Texas and FSU will be strong favorites to make match play. After that it gets a little more unpredictable. Still think if the Illini can get to match play they can beat anyone.

You'd certainly think we're a clear favorite to make the Top 15.

And then with Mike Small coaching and our vast tournament experience, I'd have to also give us a great shot at making the final 8 (match play) too.

Absolutely.
It's wonderful to be reliably good at something, isn't it? And on top of that, I like golf. This is a great time of year.

Our NCAA Tourney historical performance (source = wiki):

- 13 NCAA tournament births in the past 13 years (**2020 cancelled due to Covid; the streak dates back to 2009).
- Elite 8 -- Reached match play 6 times (2017 was the last)
- Final 4 -- Semi-finalists in 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017
- NCAA runner up in 2013, losing to Alabama

Two individual champs: Langley in 2010 and Pieters in 2012

This is the best team we've had since 2017, lets hope for similar results.

How many NCAA championship appearances? BIG titles? Final Fours? I say Illinois golf is an orange-and-blue blood.

I believe that Illinois has the second-longest streak of making it past regionals to the final site, behind only Texas

13 straight and tied with Texas, according to Illinois golf website.

I just hope when the dust has settled, Mike Small will be able to play some real, competitive golf himself. First things first, however. Job one.

He could definitely make some coin on the senior tour, but at 55, I think he’s committed to a career of coaching with an occasional tournament on the side. Maybe he could still be competitive at 60 but that’s a rare bird.
