Coach’s alma mater or not, I can not for the life of me find any reason given the stage of his career why he would go back to KState. 58 years old, he would have to hire a whole new staff if what is here doesn’t tag along, and then start a 3-4 year rebuild.

Brad Underwood, Bill Self, Scott Drew. What a list of candidates that will never happen

Murray State's Matt McMahon would seem a likely candidate for a bunch of these power 5 openings. He took over a program that's consistently very good and kept them there, and Ja Morant is a feather in his cap.

For those wondering what happened to other Murray State coaches who jumped to power 5 schools, two of McMahon's predecessors, Billy Kennedy and Steve Prohm, didn't have consistent success but made some runs in the March tournament, while Mick Cronin and Mark Gottfried fared quite well.

Someone talk me off the ledge- despite all of LSU's potential positives ($$$, donor base, easier conference schedule, better NIL opportunities).. hopefully Josh won't let him get away. Unless there is something behind the scenes we don't know about, hopefully he's here to stay.

Josh has done everything to keep Underwood. If he wants to leave he will, but I don’t see that happening. KSU doesnt have our resources and LSU is a dumpster fire right now. Underwood is reported to be in the top 10 of coaching salaries now and there is a $8M buyout to leave.

LSU is an average at best basketball program, it's a football school, he doesn't have to see Brian Kelly at DIA functions, he's one of the best paid coaches in the NCAA, he's had tons of support here, he's been treated well and trusted, he is in a great recruiting area, he has spent all this time to build a winner, he won't have to deal with the sanctions against the school, he is in a better basketball conference

Is that sufficient?

Exactly. The LSU job seems to me like volunteering for death row.

Man this weekend is really bringing out the manic depression in the fanbase. Looking for ways the committee is going to screw us and worrying if Underwood will leave.

The committee is just worried about putting a workable bracket together. They don't give a bleep that John Groce used to coach here. Nobody does.

More importantly, this is your annual reminder that other schools trying to steal your coach is a good thing. It means you're doing something right.

Underwood leaving? Man, some of will make up anything for the sake of another post, eh?
Lol.. I think it's a fair assumption to at least assume he would entertain a discussion with his alma mater or a school with extremely deep pockets. Or at least his agent having that conversation and leveraging a raise. Just saying.. we have no idea what happens behind the scenes.

I don't understand the fear that BU will depart for K-State. He has climbed a steep, boulder-strewn mountain here in five seasons and has re-established this program as a top Big Ten contender and annual March threat. He has recruiting momentum, and a cohesive, strong culture to sell. His players clearly love each other. He has senior leadership having set strong examples of work ethic and character, high standards that the underclassmen are expected, and want, to emulate. He has one of the most engaged, loyal fan bases in D-1. He has outstanding facilities, and resources at his disposal for future investment. He has a young, supportive, extremely talented AD who hired him. He cut his teeth in coaching at Western for 10 years and saw the Illini as a premier program at that time.

Bill Self was a Big 8 guy. Grew up outside OK City, Mr. Basketball OK, four-year letterman at OK State, coached at Tulsa before joining us. Kansas was a premier, long-established program that was an annual Elite 8 contender under Roy Williams. It ranks in the top three in all-time wins and winning %. Only one coach in its history (the inventor of basketball, no less) has had a losing record there, and he left 115 years ago. Nothing to build there, no adversity to overcome, a huge demand for limited supply (spots on team, seats in Allen FH), it was literally an empty throne waiting comfortably to be occupied.

IMO K-State has little to no attraction other than as BU's alma mater and his relatively brief coaching stop there under Huggy Bear and Frank Martin. It lives in the perpetual shadow of KU and likely always will. Why would he leave what he has rebuilt at Illinois for that? I'm mystified why anyone is concerned. I mean, it's not like our fans are surly, ungrateful, and detached from reality, like Maryland's, and booing him off the floor early season because he hasn't won a BT regular season title in 20 months. [EDIT: And, lol, the team who beat MD and precipitated that disgraceful display last Dec. just ran the table in NYC and beat UNC and Duke by 13 and 15 pts, respectively.]

We love the guy, he loves us, and it's not as if the coaching profession affords many such places like Champaign. Where is he more likely to win a Natty and to compete annually to get within shouting distance of one? Champaign, or Manhattan, KS? BU doesn't strike me as a guy seeking a steady paycheck and a La-Z-Boy.
