2021-22 College Hoops Coaching Carousel

That's a really weird one. And Florida has a very good 2022 class coming in too. I wonder if White was about to get canned, because this seems like a pretty big step down for him.

And for Georgia, you'd think they'd take a chance on an up-and-comer rather than a coach from the same conference, coming off a mediocre season.
The article I read (not sure if the one linked here) kind of sounded like it might be like the MD situation with Turgeon — fans been on him.

And not sure why you’d want an up and comer over an established coach who has experience recruiting same footprint you do.

Speculation about BU going to LSU or KSU.

Up and comer has upside. White has been ok, but you kind of see the ceiling of what he can establish. Of course you'd want someone with a pedigree like BU or Chris Beard above all else, but Georgia doesn't have a shot at anyone like that.

Well sure they’d love a top coach, but like you said they aren’t beating down door to go to Georgia. I don’t follow FL or SEC enough to know too much about White’s coaching acumen, but on paper he looks pretty good. Has brought in some nice recruiting classes and while he hasn’t been Billy Donavan, his record is solid+ and definitely a step up from Crean. I think a good hire for Georgia.

I'm not saying it's a bad hire, it just seems more like the kind of hire you make if you're ok with moving from the bottom of the conference to the middle. He's an improvement over Crean, sure, but I actually think, when taking their respective trajectories into account, Crean was doing better at Indiana than White at Florida (it's certainly debatable though). Georgia just strikes me as the kind of situation where a high-risk/high-reward proposition may have been worth it.

You might be right. Though looking at Georgia’s roster and recruits they have signed, they might have wanted a guy who can hit the ground running — cuz 247 shows no committed recruits. Not sure what Crean has been doing, cuz GA has a fair amount of seniors.

Yeah, I have never been overly impressed by Crean, but the degree to which he's been a failure at Georgia has been shocking. I guess I can understand the desire to just staunch the bleeding and hold off on loftier goals for a while.

Maybe bringing some recruits with him?

Georgia may have been turned down by several top choices, and once they found out Mike White was in play decided to jump off the bandwagon before getting left at the end of the line. White is an okay coach, I don't see him jumping GA over the top 4 or 5 teams in the SEC.

Maybe has been brought up before…
In five years, Illinois will be in the big ten with known opponents and high revenue.
KSU is an unknown right now…after Texas and Oklahoma leave, who will be their future league opponents? League intact? less leverage for the league to get a good deal (less need to have good relations with league for football benefits).

You know , I've been reading all this BS speculation about BU and here he has to come out again with a statement about his dream job .......Why don't we all just stop the handwringing and throw our support behind the Illini team as they embark on another Dance adventure ........I'm excited to see them playing this friday and i have no ill thoughts about how they will perform this year...........

Last year was humbling and I really think it prepares us for the task at hand ...............I really really do..................

I think White's seat was getting pretty warm at Florida. Middling results at a place where they expect to win titles. If White can get Georgia to mediocrity, that would be a big step forward for that program. They've only made 3 NCAA tournaments in the last 20 years & haven't made it out of the 1st weekend since 95'-96.

Seems like the kind of stop that could de-rail a high level up and comer's trajectory. Probably a better fit for a decent, veteran coach who is looking for some stability. It is very weird, since they are the same conference and huge rivals in football, but it makes a bit of sense if you dig deeper than the optics.
