2021-22 College Hoops Coaching Carousel

If a biopic is ever made about Sean Miller's life, I want it narrated by Billy Crystal as he's ghostwriting Miller's memoir on the typewriter...

Does that do it for BU rumors this carousel? Or anything else we need to fret about?

Wasn't it the year before Self left for Kansas that he flirted with Arkansas? That was when you kind of had an idea that for Self that Illinois wasn't for the long haul.
Should be. One difference now between self is the AD now won’t get out bid like the AD back then. RGs ego got the best of him more times than not.

Yes. After the Arkansas flirtation, he signed an extension, said how happy he was at Illinois and was "in it for the long haul."

Less than a year after that, he was out the door to KU.

Self didn't "flirt" with Arkansas, he went into Guenther's office and told he was quitting to take the Arkansas job.

This is the key. I happen to believe Self that he ONLY leaves Illinois for KU, provided we can provide a competitive salary. That last part was a big "if" with RG, but it is very clearly not with JW. I mean, I feel like some Illini fans still have this insecurity that we are any more of a "stepping stone job" than the likes of Syracuse, Arizona or Michigan ... but I don't think we are.

The ONLY places we have ever lost a coach to in the modern era are the NBA (which even happens to Kentucky!!) and Self to KU (where he stated it was his dream job and the one place he would leave for). In that same time span, we have straight up handpicked very successful coaches from two other major conference programs (Kruger from Florida and Underwood from Oklahoma State). This is a premier job, period. It's always going to be about money, no doubt, but I think we finally have an AD that appreciates digging out the checkbook when it matters.

Random question... Missouri fans view Missouri as a "basketball school," right? Kind of thought they were the SEC's version of Maryland, minus a national championship, but maybe I'm wrong.

That's doing a huge disservice to Maryland and it's historically strong basketball program. Mizzou is historically a middle of the pack program with a few stretches of higher quality (e.g., the Norm Stewart years).

Every Missouri fan I know (and I have a family full of them) cares about football more than basketball.

Edit: They care about basketball much less than Maryland, which makes sense given how much stronger of a program Maryland has been historically.

OK, I guess my impression of Missouri basketball is colored by watching all the Braggin' Rights games growing up when both teams were actually good at the same time. I will say, the Norm Stewart years did last for... checking Wikipedia... 32 seasons (!), so that is quite the stretch.

That being said, I'm surprised to learn just now that Missouri has never made a Final Four in its history.

With the passage of time, RG's tenure gets cast into a more negative light.

Kudos for building projects and running a clean program. Major criticism in talent evaluation, retention and exalted sense of self.
