Maybe I’m in the minority here - but why exactly? What message would they be sending and what did the catcher do wrong? I have watched this replay a bunch and can’t seem to figure out what the issue is
Do not hit the mvp in the head and call for inside pitches from a pitcher who was extremely wild. Second part is what TLR told the catcher when he charged him.

Extremely wild? 4 of his last 5 pitches were strikes…let’s not suddenly believe every word larussa spits out. The catcher was calling the game. The pitcher seemed to have gathered himself from the Collins walk and was throwing strikes - there isn’t a catcher in the league that doesn’t call for that pitch in that situation.

So we blame the catcher for calling a pitch in the inside third and upper third of the plate because the pitcher was struggling with command? Come on now. You can argue maybe he shouldn’t have done it (hindsight is 20/20 of course) but let’s not act like he deserves to get plunked. What’s the message to send? Don’t try to pitch a strike to Abreu that he struggles with (relatively)? I understand the safety concern, but I don’t think it at all merits a “message”. It was an honest mistake and he certainly trusted his pitcher more than LaRussa, but I expect any catcher would trust their pitcher more than the opposing manager…
If you watch TLR at the beginning he basically saying stay away, you called it in, we will take care of our guy. Then he was basically letting the catcher know that the catcher is an idiot. When you have a guy throwing 99 mph and you constantly call inside pitches someone is going to get hit and in Abreu's lucky not to lose his career. TLR had every right to be upset with Cleveland ever if they weren't intentionally throwing at Abreu. Catchers know when they pitcher can't hit a spot and you have to protect the opposing batters some too. If not then a message may need to be sent that you are a moron and should not let your pitcher throw 99 mph near the hitter since neither of you know where it is going.

you my friend need to do some critical thinking...about many things. thanks for the convo, we can agree to disagree and my playing coaching and managing experience sides with TLR and MVP Abreu ...Having seen Tony C lose his career and a few teams pitch tight to WS and Abreu...I am over it and am glad for a voice...personally was not happy with TLR choice...but he is winning me over some...done with this. Thanks again for convo.

Abreu literally hugged the catcher. That’s not exactly how someone communicates “you’re a moron”….

He literally bounced back from the walk to hit his spots. Flip the ropes and imagine if we called a pitch IN THE STRIKE ZONE and the pitcher misses that bad. Nobody can expect their pitcher to miss by 3-4 feet. He wasn’t calling for a high and inside pitch. He was set up in the strike zone. Well within it.

That is where we will disagree. The top inside corner of the strike zone is calling for a pitch under the hands. Stoney was talking about how that pitcher has had control issues recently and BOOM. Tony did not go out there to start a fight, he pushed the guy away, told him he had some responsibility, and turned toward his guy. The catcher then escalated the situation. Then TLR even said he knew they weren't throwing at him and there would be no retribution. Fans wanted retribution. Abreu is and was getting sick of being hit. He hugged the pitcher because he knew that the pitcher didn't mean too but to have a reaction to a pitch that was inches away from possibly ending someone's career is not an over-reaction.

I literally said calling for retribution was the over reaction. I think what I’m saying is not being understood.

Go, go, White Sox! Loving how the Cubs fans, including my son-in-law and daughter, don’t even want to watch the games (especially against the Sox) and are complaining how hard it is to be a Cubs’ fan after gloating the past ten years. Karma.

I’m not the world’s biggest Field of Dreams guy, but the players coming out through the corn was pretty cool.

All I have to say is that I have chills. This Field of Dreams game is absolutely amazing.

it was an awesome venue & great game
there is no reason for MLB to not make that an annual game between different clubs every year

If they have the Cubs there next year, I think that will ruin it for me, unless they are playing the White Sox.

Would have loved to see the obnoxious Yankees fans who thought they had the game won in the top of the ninth after Anderson's homer won it, but I have a black heart.

Really cool ending for the fireworks, which I assume would have gone off after the game no matter how it ended.

hate to break it to you, but the rumor is the Cubs are on the agenda next time. And I highly doubt it would be against the Sox.
my guess is at least for awhile, they put a midwest team up against a west coast or east coast team , the midwest team giving up a home game for the lions share of tickets as it does take away a significant amount of home ticket revenue.
my guess is over the next few years you see the Cubs, Cards, Royals, Brewers and Twins all getting a chance to host a home game there. after that, all teams are game.

The game will sell out, its simply how much is MLB willing to charge for the seats and will they make the place any larger. Seems like first base side of the park could easily be expanded to add 5000-6000 more seats, without taking away the small minor league AA/AAA type park feel it enjoys right now.

MLB needs to do more "gimmicky" games like this , in obscure parts of the country , on national TV . Bring the game to small towns, figure out some local angle, and play. Didnt they play a real game (or was it just an exhibition, in Williamsport a few years back during the Little League World Series?

Oh, I know that the Cubs are rumored for next year, which is why I mentioned it. I just won't be able to handle the amount of sap that will be oozing if they are there.

I agree with your guess of how it might play out. I could definitely picture Cubs/Dodgers next year (ugh!, count me out), followed by Brewers/Red Sox, Cards/Giants, Twins/Orioles. I think they'll alternate leagues and coasts if it continues, and go with older franchises.

If they really want to keep it closely tied to the actual movie, the Sox should be installed as the home team. Have a rotation of the older franchises with players in (or implied to be in) the film as the visitors: Reds, Cardinals, Red Sox, Giants, Dodgers, Browns, etc.

I agree that the 'midwestern teams as home team' thing is likely how it will go down though. I'm a hard pass on a Cubs Field of Dreams game as well, but that's just my standard policy on anything to do with that franchise. :sneaky:

I wish they had been able to get it together and announce that Shoeless Joe Jackson was now eligible for the HOF at the game last night, especially in light of that walkoff home run against the Yankees, just as Joe did so many years ago...
