This is my least favorite Illini team I can remember - I love all the players individually but it was a really tough team to watch- not playing hard, hero ball, chucking up threes, over dribbling

Nothing fun to watch or really look back fondly about this team- time to move forward

Mayer “guarding” the inbounder with his hands on his knees when one more stop was needed told me all I needed to know about his buy in.
Mayer was brutal the whole game, couldn’t catch the ball, defend, dribble or shoot- yet he kept hurting the team every chance he got

I saw Epps shoulder BU during a time out...and he has seemed to ignore BU during chew outs...he could be someone not here next year...I am torn about this...
This worries me too. He is a point getter. If we lose Epps, Cohawk, MM and TJS we will be replacing 80% of our offense gain. I do not think Harris and Ty suddenly become knock down shooters next year, IMHO. That leaves you RJ and Goode. Who knows with DD, hopefully he can develope into a consistent10pt per night guy. We are going to have to strike gold in the portal. We could be very young and offensively challenged yet again next year.

Can't pin this entire loss on Hawkins, but man it really sticks in my craw how much he talked before this game about turning heads and shocking people in the tournament. And then we played like this.
Well they did turn heads right? I mean so many of those turnovers, forced 3s, and bonehead shots turned my head and Chuck was obviously shocked at the pathetic nature of our care for the ball based on what he said from the studio after the game.

So all in all, they shocked people with an all new low and surely turned heads by their play, which the English language doesnt really have words negative enough to appropriately describe.

It was kind of a fitting end for him. He was critical to so much of our “success” later in the year but it seems like few of us ever bought his act. Good for him. He got paid.

I want him and TSJ back bad. This team had chemistry issues, and my novice take is it clearly wasn’t the fault of these two, and both are talented. I’ll defer to insiders, but if we need some guys to leave to start fresh and get back on track … I think Coleman would be a tough loss.
TSJ has all the talent in the world but I don’t think he’ll ever have that dog mentality that’s needed to be truly great.

You love these players individually? I like four: Goode, Rogers, Epps, and Lieb. The rest consistently never showed up to play and weren't prepared. That's largely coaching too, btw. So pathetic.

Ok I'm confused. I thought this was Terrence Shannon Jr's last year? Does he have the chance to come back? Is Matt Mayer our only player that cannot potentially return?

The most numb I've felt to a tournament loss by Illinois ever. And not even in a salty way. They just kind of played like they have all season and that's pretty much all I expected
Exactly my feelings tonight I usually would've left work early to watch. I stayed right at my desk and watched on my phone the whole game. Exactly the performance I expected this afternoon. I'm not salty or majorly disappointed like previous seasons I expected this and braced for it. This team was the epitome of mediocre this season.

There's a lot of doom and gloom about the future of the program, most of it based around how the freshmen performed this season. Those people seem to be forgetting part of the point of Underwood's "Get Old, Stay Old" mantra is getting guys who are going to stick around for 3-4 years to develop. COVID messed up the balance a bit, and I believe with TSJ (assuming he leaves) and MM gone we'll see better team chemistry next year.

I want players who want to be here and can be coached. Sometimes there may be a reason you are open (other team wants you to be the one) just like there may be a reason they head to the portal. We are the University of Illinois and will have top recruits. Quitters Quit, The enemy of great is good and those who don't want to be here .... dont let the door hit you .$$ on the way out. BU will get us there. We will stack classes. The culture took a hit this year and this will get corrected.

That's my gripe w/ Brad this year--if someone isn't running the offense they need to sit, no matter how high our expectations were. I suspect that Brad thought these guys would play through it and step up, but that's not what happened. Still, it was a fun season and even some of the losses were great games (although some weren't).

I-L-L!!
As far as I can remember, the only time there was any accountability the entire season, as far as PT goes, was Mayer sitting for the last several minutes of the game today. Where was that discipline throughout the season? BU's a lot of bark, no bite. No accountability. No real expectations.

I agree with the philosophy, but entering year 7 next fall, BU will have signed 1 guard that has made it to year 3 in the program. 1. That’s unreal.

Yes…definitely to both. I like both of them
a lot…

But they both need to pout less, get better at decision-making, and be more poised. Deal?

AND…Forgive me I’ve been holding this one in for a long time…

Crotchety Old Coach: …finish around the rim with the correct hand relative to the side of the basket…and use the the other arm to shield the defender. How many times do you have to get blocked before you figure that out? You can’t twist and contort and put up an under-handed layup with the wrong hand in traffic. Just make the old man play once in a while. Geez.
The only one that even tries to do it the fundamental way is Epps. Probably because he’s smaller and he has to do sh_t right to get it done.

This game truly was a microcosm of our entire season. It played out exactly the way we thought it would.
I would take it even more granular and say that the period of time when Meyer was playing without his shoe and nobody on the bench thought enough (or cared enough) to toss it to him during the first stoppage in play is a microcosm of our entire team culture.
