BIG Predictions

9-9. We'll beat Wisconsin once (finally) and lose to Northwestern. We'll sweep Minnesota and Rutgers, beat Nebraska, Penn State, Ohio State once, and one surprise win, maybe Indiana or Iowa. Those first 4 games are going to be rough.. PLEASE beat Michigan.

I have a feeling this is about the best we are going to be able to do.

I think MH, KN, and C-L combine to have a couple of great games and shoot-lights out, so perhaps a couple of surprises.

Lack of rebounding, defense, and dribble penetration will takes its toll over the long run.

Ten years without a Big Ten championship. Getting old.

A lot depends on leron's health then rebounding won't be that much of a problem MH ,KN , MF and MM have to hit the glass hard , if I'm groce I'm telling AJ and DJW defense and rebounding are key and if you're open for a shot take it.

I'm projecting us to finish 10th in the Big Ten with a 7-11 record in conference and a 15-16 record overall.

I hope I'm wrong because the thought of finishing with a losing record for the season is downright depressing. :(

I've been in the camp of 6-12 and 7-11 for a while, but the more I thought about making that prediction, the more I think this is the biggest crapshoot season in recent memory. I could see this team catching fire for a stretch and beating some teams they shouldn't and finish somewhere in the 10-8 range. I simply don't have a read on this team. I will say this, I'm very glad the B10 is down this year in terms of depth.

I think 7-11 is a pretty good guess. Can we all agree that if Groce gets this team to 9-9 in the B1G, he has proven he can coach?

I will concede that! All I desire for this season is being above. 500 when it's all said and done. That means 8-10 in the big ten with one tournament win, or 9-9. I think that is the best reasonable outcome this year, however I believe we end up at 7-11 with a first round BTT exit.

Hoping for 9-9. For the fans and the athletes confidence really hoping they show up Wednesday so we do not start 0-4. Even 1-3 sounds much better then that.

Yeah, there's a very strong possibility that if we lose to Michigan, we'll start 0-4. And that would be tough to recover from, even though the schedule does get a bit easier later on.

Sorry guys I don't see a 0-4 start 2-2 at best 3-1 is possible y'all gotta realize Finke is a mismatch for other bigs , he won't be camped out down low trynnna Bang with the big boys on offense only on defense is when he'll be down there, when he hits a few shots they will have to guard him if they switch he'll be bigger than the person on him , so we do have a chance.

What do you think the over/under would be in B1G wins for Illinois? My guess is 7.5.

I'm still sticking with 11-7 even if no LB, I hope I'm right. Just too many 50/50 games where we could really pull out wins.

I like the way the team is trending the last two games, especially on the defensive end. Freshman are rapidly improving with the extra playing time they are getting due to injuries.

If the team as whole can shoot better, this team will be hard to beat. Groce's offense is producing open shots... the team just has to make them.

Definitely. .500 with injuries to Nunn, Black, and JCL, and losing Thorne, Abrams, and Paul, would be quite impressive. Even getting to the NIT would be decent IMO.

10-8 in the BIG

Black returns for the home game vs. Ohio State on January 28th.

Thorne returns for the Indiana game on February 25th.

Hill and Nunn earn 2nd team all-conference. Finke earns Freshman of the Year.

Tate gets right. JCL, AJ and DJW improve on D we make a run to the BIG semi-finals and grab an 11 seed in The Dance where we get hot and make a run to the Sweet 16.

Tourney run excites recruits and we land two post players in this class and Damonte and Goodwin commit early to start the 2017 class off on the right foot.

And Kiera Knightley shows up and kisses me on the lips....

And then my alarm clock goes off. Damn.

Anyway, I'll go on record predicting we sweep Rutgers and Minney, and beat Nebraska at our house, plus we win another one or two at home against teams in the middle of the conference. If we get 2 of those middle wins, that's 7 - 11. We win one in the BTT, and that's a wrap for the season.

I would love to drink some kool-aid, but our adj defense is 169 on KenPom, and using the eye test, I think we're not very hard to scout. It's just really hard for me to imagine us over-coming our current weaknesses to the degree necessary for us to beat the upper teams in the conference. If Black comes back, that would help us a lot though. On the down side, I don't even want to think about it. We could easily go 0-4 to start, and I would consider 1-3 to be worth celebrating.

Based on the latest possible preseason rankings on kenpom, here are the predictions for B1G tournament seeds. Blank squares are seeds that occurred zero times in a million sims - anything else (even 0%) happened at least once.

I've done a little updating of the code that will hopefully help with predicting tourney opponents a bit more accurately. This year, I'm planning to run things with and without tiebreakers throughout the season as the results and rankings evolve, to see how much of an effect tiebreakers have at any given point. I was surprised to see the tiebreakers appear to have a non-negligible effect even this early in the season--more on that later.

6 wins is going to be a pretty big accomplishment for this group. I will be at the Michigan game tomorrow and am extremely doubtful I see a win. Several posters have referenced quality performances in close-ish losses to ISU and Notre Dame, but I have yet to see this team put together a complete game. That leads me to believe we can lose to anyone in the Big Ten. I don't expect we will be competitive against the top half of the conference and our record at the end of the year will likely reflect that.

6-12. I think they can do better, but I'm trying to manage my expectations for sanity sake...
