Big Ten Media Rights / Conference Realignment

But at the end of the day, I think the politicians will view having 1 school go to a premier conference, while the other is stuck in an also-ran conference is preferable to both schools being stuck in an also-ran conference.

Not if said politicians went to OSU and hate OU sports. Sticking OU in an also-ran conference would be a dream come true.

If UT decides to join, the BIG will invite OU and they'll accept in a nanosecond. Yeah, their academics aren't up to snuff, but they're not a raging tire fire either. They can be brought up with time (a la Nebraska). Their market isn't much, population wise, but that's totally negated by their football standing. They are a king and their legion of fans are rabid.
Agree, especially with ACC GOR extended...no chance an ACC team sneaks in short term for 2nd spot. I also think this will give OU enough cover to leave OSU out.

The biggest problem w/OU is political. Separating from OSU is not going to be easy. The Cowboys crowd is going to kick, scream and try to stop it. But at the end of the day, I think the politicians will view having 1 school go to a premier conference, while the other is stuck in an also-ran conference is preferable to both schools being stuck in an also-ran conference.
Agree on the political separation anxiety, not convinced it will be that rational though...if Texas/OU are gone the big 12 no longer qualifies as an also ran conference and pretty much will leave OSU for dead, I think it will take some cover that OU is in trouble, if Texas agrees to leave first, again that may be enough, but it will be ugly either way. i think it would be much harder for OU to leave first by themselves without OSU having a soft landing...but I think that would be most interesting scenario in what Texas's next move would be.

In case of VA & VA Tech it proved to not even be that simple...even VA grad/governor ended up supporting VA Tech because of political pressure/votes (not sure he was anti VA tech to begin with though)...even if you don't like OU, you do want OU fans voting for you if you're a politician & financial impact of falling off the football map matters to state, regional economy, and voters so there are plenty of forces pushing the other way on this one.

Oh, a large segment of the debate won't be rational. It'll be a barroom brawl and the squealing will be pegged at 11. There won't be a soft landing for OSU. The BIG will orchestrate the move by inviting UT and OU as a pair (there won't be an invitation if there's any doubt about the answer). UT accepts posthaste and the fight is on. Should be epic. But again, I think the politicos will not block OU. Operative word being think.

Interesting article.
As the Big 12 makes plans for expansion, TV networks are preparing for a fight to avoid paying for lesser candidates

http://www.si.com/private/api_refer...reparing-fight-avoid-paying-lesser-candidates
Why would they do this to schools they may have to deal with later? Executives at both networks consider an expansion by four to be an admission by Big 12 members that the league €”as currently constituted €”won't exist past 2025. They really only care about Oklahoma and Texas anyway, so relationships with the other schools after Oklahoma and Texas leave for other leagues (where they'd be paid handsomely by ESPN and/or Fox) is of only minor concern to the networks

Can I order the exact opposite of that...?

BTN & NBCSN w/out cable, is that too much to ask?

btw - Sling TV offers Espn, Espn 2 & U, plus local fox sports for $20 + $5 sports add on and their two basic plans are labelled "orange" & "blue" to boot.

Yeah I'm really hoping BTN gets added to sling sometime soon to make this the best deal for me

Will be interesting to see if Texas and OU agree to extend their GoR beyond 2025. The B12 is certainly going to push for this. I don't think there's any way UT and OU extend.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if the BIG has made it clear (via backchannels) that invitations await.

If the B1G were to expand I'd like to see ND included. Would be open to Misdouri as well.

ND has been tendered invitations numerous times. Until their path to the playoffs is eliminated, they will remain independent. Scheduling is going to be more difficult for them, but they'll manage.

Miznoz is a flat no.

Missouri adds nothing in terms of footprint and TV sets so it makes the league no money, yet they'd have to pay an additional member. They're also gonna be alright financially in the sec. Texas and OU are the best bets for footprint and B1G finances.

Musical chairs keep moving.
I find it interesting -- others here may already know this -- that the B1G has 3 of the top 5 most popular college football teams in the NYC TV market.

One of the arriviste AAC schools finally giving up the ghost on football would be quite a move. That has not yet happened.

UConn makes sense as that school given that their football program has always been a stepchild, and the conference striving lunacy is doing real damage to a premier, beloved basketball program who have a natural home in a first-rate basketball conference.

Would Cincinnati consider the same move if they don't get the golden ticket? Temple? Maybe even Memphis?

UConn is an odd duck school that doesn't fit into any conference well.

It's a much larger school and public, unlike the mid-sized Catholic schools in the Big East. But too "big time" and and not a geographic fit for the American. It's only been playing FBS football since 2000 and so unlikely to be attractive to the ACC, Big 12, etc.

Really, the big Northeastern public schools should have formed their own conference years ago when Pitt, Rutgers and Penn St were still "free agents", but since they were all over the place in terms of the level of their football programs, they never had the opportunity.

A good start to a conference would be UMass, UConn, Army, Navy, Temple, and Marshall. Maybe Old Dominion. Try to get others like URI, Delaware and Maine to jump up a level in football. That would at least give you a cohesive group of schools to have a conference around.

That's true if you're playing in-a-vacuum matchmaker. And there is a neat little cohesion in the Big East, though lessened somewhat by Butler which is not a Catholic school.

Regardless though, in term of their place in basketball history, UConn belongs with Georgetown and Nova and St. Johns and the rest of the historical Big East. Those are all natural historic rivals and basketball programs worthy of them, a combination that can't be said of a single one of their current conference mates. There is zero question they would have been a member of the new Big East from day one if it weren't for their phantom limb of a football program.

UConn Basketball deserves much, much better than that. Time to let the gridiron dream die. The golden ticket to the Power Five isn't coming and the rest of FBS football is being left for dead.

Ran into this article the other day and it gives you an idea how desperate some of these schools are to get into a major conference while there's still a chance.
A Big 12 setback wouldn't be just any setback. A Big 12 setback would be the most painful and public sports setback in this city since the NFL picked Jacksonville.
There's a reason University of Memphis president David Rudd started working on realignment issues his first day in office. There's a reason FedEx has been willing to step forward in such an extraordinary — even unprecedented — way.

As an addition to the previous Memphis article.
What the Memphis writer called Fed Ex stepping forward in an extraordinary --even unprecedented -- way, it appears this writer calls it bribery.

Schools are doing all kinds of things to make their case to be included in Big 12 expansion. Houston is practicing politics. Memphis has resorted to bribery. Brigham Young offers its résumé. But we haven't heard much from Connecticut, outside of the Baltusrol gallery.

Geographically this makes sense tho I hate Mizzou.....if Texas and out got added they'd HAFTA be in the west and perhaps Pitt and Notre same east?!
