Bowl Games & CFB Playoff

So wasn’t sure where to put this, but Robert had a post explaining why he doesn’t root for other BIG teams in bowl games out of conference solidarity/rising tide lifts all boats etc. And it got me thinking about how I root way more for the BIG in the NCAA tournament vs bowls and it made me realize I like or respect most BIG basketball coaches but I don’t really like/actively dislike most other BIG football coaches.

BB coaches I hate/dislike: Juwan, Fran, Izzo

BB coaches I really like: Painter, Pickell, Shrewsberry, Gard

BB coaches I’m indifferent to/too early to tell: Willard, Minnesota coach, Woodson (leaning towards dislike but think that’s mainly about IU)

Everyone else I at least respect.

Football, I sort of liked Paul Chryst before he was fired? Otherwise I dislike just about everyone else. Maybe respect Ferentz but I still don’t like him.
Haven't read Robert's post but, my opinion has always been that other conference teams are your main recruiting rivals. If they have success it will be much harder to beat them out for recruits. If they aren't very good, easier to get players coming to your team.

So Purdue has a lot of guys out on offense, but they’re losing 63-7 😳
Illinois and Mississippi St are more comparable teams. Mississippi St has more talent on both sides of the ball than Illinois. They might get 5-6 4 star guys for example each season plus transfers. The talent difference is not that big with the styles that were played today. I have no doubt Illinois wins that game if both teams had players that played throughout the season today. I am not down about the game at all.

Purdue losing a star QB who was a "franchise QB" for this program who threw 88% of the TD passes this season and the top WR and TE who accounted for 80% of the TD receptions were out plus others on both sides of the ball. Purdue missing those guys was massive but so is the talent gap between teams. LSU had something like sixteen 4 star recruits and two 5 star recruits in the 2021 recruiting class alone. The 2020 recruiting class had thirteen 4 star guys and three five star guys. (Not saying all of them stayed but huge gap in talent) SEC teams have tons of 4 star recruits that don't see the field every season. The talent gap was huge and just a horrible matchup for Purdue today. Both teams played a bunch of guys or the score would have been worse. Weird to say that

The counterpoint to this is that one of your main recruiting (pre-NIL) pitches was you could advertise that your school plays the likes Michigan and Ohio State with the major bonuses of getting on TV and being more seen playing tougher competition by NFL scouts.

Example from hoops history: when Jim Calhoun started at UConn, he sold kids from places like California by mentioning UConn playing the big boys in the Big East and then eventually became one of the big boys of Big East

Also look at recruiting rankings of any non-Vandy school in the SEC and some years Vandy get okay ratings too

Another hoops example: easy to recruit when you are Gonzaga compared against the rest of your conference.

I'm torn on the Rose Bowl . . . Root for the baby molesters and the honor of the B1G? Or hope that justice will be delivered on Chester the Molester Ped State?
You don’t actually root for them nor say their name. You root for ‘the Big Ten representative to the Rose Bowl’

They should have put TCU at 4 and O. State at 3. That way, Michigan gets O. State again. O. State wins and Georgia gets this senseless blow out completed. If SCUM wins-they get blown out:)

I wish the announcers would start calling out the O-Line for Georgia by name more. I know the QB gets almost all the praise when times are good, but my gosh, the time Bennett gets in a clean pocket would be a dream. Duggan would be putting up these numbers behind that Georgia O-Line.

If I am a TCU fan I wonder if losing a close semifinal is better than this. OUCH. Opposing QB curtain call with 12 minutes left? No thanks
